STAKEHOLDERS REVIEW FRENCH LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES IN NIGERIA
The need to re-position the study of French Language   in Nigeria   with total focus of making the major reason of introducing it to the Nigerian academic world a reality, came to the fore at the just concluded forum between the Heads of Department of French in Nigerian Universities, Degree Awarding Institutions and   the Management of the Nigeria French Language Village (NFLV), Badagry respectively.

In his  welcome address, Prof. Raufu Adebisi, the Director General /CEO,Nigeria French Language Village, who was the chief host opined that the need to review the  impact of French language in Nigerian universities and the  compulsory language immersion programme.

“It is the customary of the village to  invite Head of Departments of French in Nigerian Universities  and Colleges  of Education to Badagry for interaction towards improved delivery of our  services. As major partners in this business, we of the Nigerian French Language village hold you in high esteem and hope that our existing cordial relationship will grow from strength to strength” Prof. Adebisi opined.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, top on the agenda at “The Annual Meeting” were the need to review the activities of the French Village for 2015/2016 academic session and deliberate on other matters of interests to French Studies in Nigeria.

The forum notes the level of infrastructural development and high academic standard in the Nigeria French Language Village and commended the hard work and commitment of the Management and Staff of the Village.

Going further, the forum decried the non-promotion of eminently qualified academic staff of the Village to the professional cadre, which has led to the exodus of scholars from the Village; and  particularly disturbed by the stagnation of colleagues at the Senior Lectureship grade in the French Village.

"We  therefore urge the Federal Ministry of Education to give approval for the promotion of qualified colleagues as it obtains in sister institutions like The National Institute of Nigerian Languages (NINLAN), Aba and The Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Lagos".
Continuing "we are  worried about the dismay of  de-listing of Nigeria French Language Village, Badagry, from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) intervention since 2010 in spite of the growing student population in the Village" the communique revealed.

The forum, therefore, calls on the Federal Government to relist the Nigeria French Language Village, Badagry , as a matter of necessity, to increase the funding of the Nigeria French Village to a level that will  enable it to carry out its mandate adequately.

In conclusion, the communique issued and  signed by the duo  of  Professor Raufu A. Adebisi, the Director/CEO,Nigeria French Language Village, Ajara-Badagry and Dr. Umar Muhammad DOGON DAJI,(Head, Department of French),Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto, respectively noted with delight the large participation of Universities and Colleges of Education in the French Language Immersion Programme, and urges them and all others to Patronise the Nigeria French Language Village for the Language Immersion Programme of their students.
