Former Governor, Kwankwaso, 10 Kano Lawmakers Rejoin PDP From APC

Rabiu Kwankwaso
Former Governor of Kano state, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso has, Tuesday, reportedly defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, party to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

According to reports not yet authenticated, Senator Kwankwaso defected with 10 Kano state lawmakers.

His defection may not be unconnected with his ordeals in the ruling party.

Recall that in March last year, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Kano State chapter had initiated moves to suspend him over what it termed anti-party activities.

The then chairman, Kano chapter of the party, Alhaji Haruna Umar Doguwa, had told newsmen in Kano that the senator had, during a visit to the state, allegedly exhibited actions capable of compromising the party’s unity.

According to Doguwa: “The case of party indiscipline by Kwankwaso would be thoroughly investigated and dealt with in accordance with the constitution of our party.”

However, the true reasons why the Senator may have defected to the opposition party is yet to be ascertained.

It would be recalled that sometime in November 2013, 5 governors elected on the platform of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) decamped to the All Progressives Congress (APC). It was an unprecedented move in Nigeria’s political history and formed the foundation for APC’s victory at the 2015 general elections.

The governors who led their supporters and political structures to APC were Governors Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano) and Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers).

They were joined by other political heavyweights such as Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Senator Bukola Saraki, the then Speaker of the House of Representatives – Aminu Tambuwal, Shaba Lafiagi, Mohammed Ndume, Danjuma Goje, Abdullahi Adam, Bindo Jubrilla and Abdullahi Gobir.

Others include Dr. Samuel Ortom, former Speaker Aminu Bello Masari, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu and Barrister Simon Lalong. In fact, of the 17 state governors elected on the platform of APC in Northern Nigeria only 7 are not ex-PDP members

Muhammadu Buhari
247Ureports - The embattled Senator from Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso is reported to have concluded plans to join the fray for the battle for the presidential ticket under the All Progressive Congress [APC] with the mindset of wrestling the party structure away from the president against the 2019 presidential polls. Information available to 247ureports.com reveal that the embattled Senator has set up committees located across the geo-political zones geared towards preparing for a potential showdown within the APC for the presidential ticket. According to available information, the committees have begun work and have received the necessary financing from the Senator.

It is against the readiness to battle the President for the APC ticket that the Senator organized street-youths to accompany him to the funeral ceremony of the former Niger State governor, Kure. While at the funeral grounds, the embattled Senator and his street-youths began chatting war-like songs in Hausa language demeaning the President of Nigeria and calling for his replacement with Kwankwaso. The street-youths rained praise songs on Kwankwaso as they followed him around. A source who was present at the grounds indicated that the “thugs were intimidating and very disrespectful“.

The source recalled that Senator Kwankwaso had repeated similar behavior in Kano when the present Governor of Kano State was burying a loved one. The embattled Senator arrived the event and rudely turned the event into campaign grounds for the kwankwasiyya group. He was accompanied by street youths who were chatting war-like songs demeaning the President and calling for his replacement with Kwankwaso. Sources who witnessed the display by the Senator and his street boys described the actions of the embattled Senator as childish and in bad taste. “He was rebuked by many“.

Close political associates of the embattled Senator indicate the Senator’s desperation levels has reached a high point. “He has relaunched a detailed investigation into the educational background of the President” with the aim to uncover if the President had actually attended the secondary school that he claimed he graduated from.  A committee has been set up to that effect. Another committee is set up to dig into the financial dealings of the President and his close family associates including his wife, children and others. The committee was tasked to uncover the mode of payment of school fees and housing cost for his children while they were schooling in London.

Beyond the investigative exercise, Senator Kwankwaso is reported to have employed the services of the spiritual underworld from far east in India to help him with spiritual magic and/or prayers against the 2019 primaries within the APC. Our source reveal that his signature red cap comes from his association with Indian spiritualists and cultists. The red cap is a mark of his membership in the spiritual cult. This is according our source who also serves as a political ally to him.  “We know him for his spiritual prowess. He is feared”.

Presently, the embattled Senator finds himself battling for survival at the hands of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] over financial dealings while at the realm of affairs in Kano State as the Governor of the State for four years. The EFCC had placed him under house arrest following the magnitude of corrupt activities uncovered during his watch as the Governor. The case remains ongoing.

APC 2015 Presidential Aspirant, Kwankwaso In Trouble Over N3b Campaign Funds He Used To Contest Against Buhari
Despite the invasion and subsequent sealing of his Kano home, on Monday, the Kano State former governor, now senator on the platform of the ruling All progressive Congress, APC,  Mr. Rabiu Kwankwanso, may have landed in fresh trouble over a N3 billion campaign fund used when he vied against the President Muhammadu Buhari and others in 2014.

According to Sahara Reporters, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into the campaign spending of the former governor.

An impeccable source in the commission told SaharaReporters that

The EFCC has found evidence that Kwankwaso diverted Kano State local government funds into his presidential campaign, an impeccable source revealed to SR.

The source hinted that Kwankwaso allegedly used his influence as governor to direct each of the 44 councils in the state contribute the sum of N70 million. Through this, he raised over N3 billion for his failed presidential bid.

The money was sourced from the State and Local Government Joint Account, an action that irked some state government officials, who petitioned the EFCC after Kwankwaso left office in 2015.

The petitioners were said to have also supplied vital documents on the alleged fund diversion to the EFCC, which prompted the commission to begin investigation. The investigation began in 2015 and has seen Mr. Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, former Secretary to the State Government, and Mr. Danjuma Mahmud, former Accountant-General visit the commission regularly.

SaharaReporters also learnt that both Bichi and Mahmud were detained at one point of the investigation, but were granted bail.

The incumbent governor of the state, Mr.  Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, relieved Mahmud of his position because of the regularity of his visits to the EFCC, which he felt was distracting him.

The EFCC source added that recently, some local government chairmen were detained and granted administrative bail by the EFCC in connection with the campaign fund.

Billed to appear before the commission this week is the Chairman  of Fagge Local Government Area, Alhaji Habibu Saleh Mailemu. Next will be Ungogo Local Chairman, Saleh Aliyu.

"I can tell you that we are investigating former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, based on a petition we have received. That is what I can say for now," said the source.

2019 & Fresh Power Tussle In APC: Buhari Woos Tinubu To Tame Atiku, Kwankwaso; Sets to ...

Punch Newspaper - There are strong indications that President Muhammadu Buhari is making fresh moves to woo the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Saturday PUNCH reliably learnt on Friday that before the President’s recent moves, the relationship between the duo had not been rosy.

Findings showed that Buhari decided to reach out to Tinubu to seek his support for the control of the APC.

It was gathered that Tinubu was not happy with the appointments the President had been making since his inauguration on May 29 last year.

Investigations revealed that among those the APC leader had tipped for appointments under the Buhari administration were a former Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State, Mr. Wale Edun, and a former Commissioner for Budget and National Planning, Mr. Yemi Cardoso.

A member of the APC National Working Committee, who confided in Saturday PUNCH, said that Tinubu had been loyal to Buhari.

According to him, Tinubu was fighting Buhari’s battle when he decided to support Senator Ahmed Lawan and move against Senator Bukola Saraki for the senate presidency.

The national officer stated that Buhari was aware of the fact that Tinubu had been loyal to him since he (Buhari) joined the presidential race.

He said, “You will recall that Tinubu was initially supporting George Akume for the senate president position, but he switched over to Lawan when it became obvious that that was the man the President preferred. Also, many APC members are aware that Tinubu lost out in ministerial and many of the appointments made by the President.”

Another prominent member of the party told Saturday PUNCH that Tinubu had been maintaining what he described as a “siddon look” attitude towards the President before now.

He said prominent  members of the party were worried that the president failed to consider the APC leader’s candidates for appointments.

A Presidency source, who confirmed the recent moves by Buhari, said that the President was not unaware of what the APC national leader did for him.

The source stated that Buhari’s reaching out to Tinubu was borne out of the alleged subtle moves by some elements in the party, including a former Kano State Governor, Dr.  Rabiu Kwankwaso, to reposition themselves for the 2019 presidential race.

The former Kano State governor was alleged to have launched his 2019 presidential ambition during his visit to Kano early this month.

The Kano State chapter of the APC had, at a press conference in Kano, said that it was probing the former governor’s “misconduct,” adding that there was no presidential vacancy in the party.

But Kwankwaso, in a statement signed by his Chief of Staff, Yunusa Dangwani, said the former governor did not launch any presidential campaign.

Explaining the governor’s visit to Kano, the aide said, “It is appalling and rather unfortunate that the good gesture of Senator Kwankwaso has been mischievously interpreted wrongly.”

Although former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has been a loyal APC man, our correspondents gathered that chieftains of the party were aware that he was not uninterested in the presidency.

In an interview with Sunday PUNCH in 2015, when asked if he would contest for the presidency again, he said that it was too early to answer such a question.

He had said, “It is quite too early for such a question. We are in a transition process. We have not even formed the next government. You are asking me whether I will like to run again or not. I think it is just too early.”

It was gathered that Buhari was aware of the moves by some elements in the party to position themselves for the 2019 presidential race.

That, investigations showed, informed the decision of the party caucus at its meeting on Tuesday to declare that there was no presidential vacancy.

According to a report on Thursday, the APC national caucus, comprising serving and former governors, the National Assembly leadership, and selected members of the national executive of the party, at the meeting said the endorsement of Buhari for a second term would help to stabilise the polity in the face of what members described as the 16-year rot inherited from the Peoples Democratic Party.

Another top member of the APC, who confided in Saturday PUNCH, said, “Buhari needs the support of Tinubu to survive the onslaught of elements that want to seize the control of the party ahead of the 2019 elections.”

The party chieftain stated that in boards and other appointments that would be made by the President in the months ahead, Tinubu’s loyalists would be taken care of as a way of wooing the APC leader.

He said, “Although the President is not somebody who can be dictated to, he is not an ungrateful person. He is aware of the role played by Tinubu in his election and he will not abandon the man.”

When contacted, the Special Assistant to the President on Media, Mallam Garba Shehu, declined comments.

Repeated calls to the Director-General of the Atiku Media Office, Mazi Paul Ibe, indicated that his phone “was either switched off or out of coverage area.”

The first call was at 2:56 pm, the last was at 6:14 pm

Also efforts to get the spokesman for Tinubu, Mr. Sunday Dare, did not succeed as calls to his mobile telephone did not go through. He had not responded to an SMS sent to him as of the time of sending this report.

But a prominent member of the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it would be good if Buhari could reach out Tinubu in view of the contributions of the party leader towards Buhari’s victory at the poll.

The immediate-past governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is facing suspension from the ruling All Progressive Congress for organising a “violent rally” in the state while paying a condolence visit to the governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, over the death of his mother. Addressing journalists in Kano on Thursday, the state party chairman, Umar Doguwa, said Mr. Kwankwaso, a serving senator, had exhibited “acts of indiscipline which should not be allowed to go unpunished”.

He said the party’s leadership and elders had approved the constitution of a disciplinary committee to penalise Mr. Kwankwaso. According to him, the condolence visit was deliberately turned to a violent rally to cause mayhem in the state, abuse the governor and President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The party and its leadership hierarchy, as enshrined in APC constitution, must be respected at all times by party members in respective of their position.

“The party leader today in Kano is nobody but Governor Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, who also must be respected by every person. “The party would leave no stone unturned in ensuring discipline, orderliness and loyalty as prescribed by the constitution of the APC.

“Such case of party indiscipline committed by Senator Kwankwaso will be thoroughly investigated and dealt with in accordance with the constitution of the party,”

Mr. Doguwa said. The party chairman also alleged that the senator hired a crowd that crossed over the perimeter fence of the Kano airport and damaged some installations.

“When the hired crowd was denied access to the airport premises, they climbed over fences, breaking the iron barriers and destroying the Security scanners. All the pictures are available for confirmation.

“Also, the hired thugs were busy distributing presidential campaign posters, car stickers reading

‘Kwankwassiya 2019, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for President, among others,” he said. The APC chairman said when other dignitaries from all walks of life – including those from the opposition party – came to condole with the governor, none of them made their visits violent. He said despite the fact that the funeral rites of the governor’s mother were conducted with decorum, humility, civility and decency in keeping with religious and cultural values of the people, Mr. Kwankwaso dishonoured the dead by holding a “violent rally”.

“During the senator’s visit, there was a violent rally and open show of thuggery as his supporters were seen openly wielding machetes, swords and other dangerous weapons,” he said. Mr. Doguwa also said the party frowned at Mr. Kwankwaso’s supporters’ call for replacement of Mr. Buhari with Mr. Kwankwaso by 2019.
