Rice Importation NOT Banned As Widely Reported - Presidency Clears The Air

Rice Importation NOT Banned As Widely Reported - Presidency Clears The Air

Rice Importation NOT Banned As Widely Reported - FG Clears The Air
The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, Femi Adesina, has decried the widespread propaganda that the Federal Government has place on outright ban on rice importation.

Adesina said this when he appeared on SweetFm’s flagship programme, The Podium.

He said the government only placed a ban on rice importation via land borders.

He said the ban on rice importation via land borders was placed so as to curtail smuggling and ensure revenue generation from rice importation.

“Importation of rice via our sea borders remain legal,” Adesina said.

Adesina equally said he would have done all he could to stop his appointment as Buhari’s media aide if he had a hint about it.
He said: “I was not expecting it.

“Maybe if I knew, I would have done all in my powers to make sure it does not happen.

“I have known him since he started contesting and wrote good things about him, but I did not know he will appoint me as his adviser.”
Adesina equally argued that Buhari’s anti-corruption fight is not selective.

He said chieftains of Buhari’s party, the All Progressives Congress and political appointees are not being prosecuted because no evidence has indicted them yet.

He said: “The onus lies on he who alleges to also prove.

“The fact that any Peoples Democratic Party member crosses to APC does not provide automatic shield.
“Whoever is indicted will be prosecuted.”

Adesina further noted that the Buhari-led Federal Government is paying more than lip service to diversification of the nation’s economy.
He said: “We have gotten to the point in which we have to diversify or die.

“The Federal Government has disbursed money so as to heavily invest in agriculture and mining.

“Dr. Fayemi has told us that the results of the ongoing investment may not be clearly seen in less than 30 years.
“However, we will lay the foundation.”

Adesina equally said the raid on judges homes was only a raid on corruption and not the judiciary.
He said: “Mr. President has said it all.

“No one is out to intimidate the judiciary.

“The Department of State Services raid was a raid on corruption not the judiciary.”

While responding to questions about Buhari’s reaction to the interview by his wife, Hajia Aisha, Adesina insisted that the President has a right to his privacy and his family matter should not be a subject of discourse in the news.

We'll Allow Rice IMPORTATION Till 2017 - FG
The Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh has said Nigeria will stop the importation of rice next year.

Ogbeh said this at a joint Anchor Borrowers rice farm inspection with the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Mr. Godwin Emefiele and the Governor of Niger State, Alh Abubakar Bello, at Sunti, Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State.

“The federal government’s massive rice production programme, has made huge impacts on the nation’s rice supply and will therefore end rice importation into the country as from next year,” he said.

Ogbeh also said the Federal Government was planning on distributing improved seedlings to farmers.

CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele while speaking said the CBN was convinced that Nigeria can achieve its objectives of putting a total barrier on food importation.

“We were convinced at the CBN that the nation was wasting foreign exchange in the importation of food items that we can conveniently produce at home. That was why we chose specific crops such as rice, wheat, soya beans and cotton as the immediate target of the programme.

“The results are there for all to see that indeed, the decision to grow the food that we eat in the country makes a great economic sense. By growing our food at home, rather than import them, we create jobs for our people, create wealth and conserve foreign exchange for other uses”, he said.

RICE Importation: Nigeria Custom Denies Ban Lift Report

RICE Importation: Nigeria Custom Denies Ban Lift Report

Rice
Having published a News item credited to current news Now  that the Nigerian Custom Service has lifted ban on rice importation through the land borders, the NCS has denied the report

Below is a press statement by the service, denying the reports.

Our attention has been drawn to publications on various online platforms indicating that the Nigeria Customs Service has reversed the ban on Rice importation through the land borders. These reports were attributed to a press interview purportedly granted by the Service Public Relations Officer, Deputy-Comptroller Wale Adeniyi.

2. It has become necessary to re-state the true position in view of the confusion which these online publications may create in the industry. It is even more expedient to provide this clarification given that the fact that the Service has taken a firm position earlier in the week through a joint press conference with Stakeholders.

3. First, we like to reiterate the position that importation of Rice remains banned through our Land Borders, and we have the commitment of Partner Government Agencies and Stakeholders to enforce this restriction. While this restriction is in force, Rice imports through the Ports are still allowed subject to payment of extant charges.

4. It is equally important to restate the confidence of the Nigeria Customs Service in the ability of Nigerian Rice Producers to fill the existing sufficiency gaps in the supply of the product. The Service has noted with satisfaction the ongoing Rice Revolution undertaken by many State Governments, and Strategic Interventions by Federal Government Agencies. The Service is convinced that the bumper harvests expected from these efforts will address the supply gap in 2017. It is our belief that continuous waste of scarce forex on a commodity that can be produced locally makes no economic sense, most especially at a period of recession. The Service will therefore advocate a total Ban on Rice Importation into Nigeria with effect from 2017.

5. It is worrisome that the publications that resurfaced this weekend were being attributed to a Press interview granted in October 2015. We strongly suspect that some powerful forces behind Rice Smuggling are at work, recycling an old report under a different circumstance to create confusion. We urge Nigerians to watch out for similar antics as the firm stand on Rice smuggling will pitch their selfish interest against our national interest.
