Brazil Beats Germany To Win First Ever Football Olympics Gold Medal

Brazil Beats Germany To Win First Ever Football Olympics Gold Medal

Brazil Beats Germany To Win First Ever Football Olympics Gold Medal
Neymar struck the winning penalty as Brazil claimed a first ever Olympic football gold medal with victory over Germany on penalties at Rio’s Maracana on Saturday.

The 5-4 shoot-out win exacted revenge for a humiliating 7-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Germany two years ago.

Olympic gold was the only major title to have escaped five-time world championsBrazil in their history.

But Barcelona star Neymar righted that historical wrong as he fired the winning penalty into the top corner before breaking into tears.

In front of the biggest crowd of Rio’s Games, including nine-time Jamaican gold medallist Usain Bolt, Neymar’s brilliant free-kick handed Brazil a first-half lead.

In honour of the retiring sprinting great, Neymar even adopted the “lightning bolt” celebration, whilst chants of “ole, ole, ole, Neymar” rang around Rio’s most iconic arena.

However, Germany captain Max Meyer enjoyed a special celebration of his own as he taunted the raucous 78,000 crowd at the Maracana by kissing the number seven on his shirt when he swept home Jeremy Toljan’s cross just before the hour mark.

The first eight penalties in the shootout were all successful before Brazilgoalkeeper Weverton stopped Nils Petersen’s effort to set the stage for Neymar.

And he didn’t disappoint as, with the weight of a nation on his shoulders, he rifled the ball into the top corner.

In stark contrast to the empty seats on show across the Games, even at times when Bolt has been running, there wasn’t a seat to be had at the Maracana — where Germany won the World Cup against Lionel Messi’s Argentina two years ago.

However, it was for the 7-1 mauling in Belo Horizonte five days previously thatBrazil were seeking revenge.

None of the players that took to the field that day started on Saturday.

Neymar missed the darkest day in Brazil‘s football history due to two broken bones in his back suffered during a bruising quarter-final win over Colombia.

Yet, the good fortune that escaped Brazil on home soil two years ago was certainly with them in the first-half as Germany were desperately unlucky to go in behind at the break.

Julian Brandt’s fine curling effort came back off the bar, whilst Sven Bender also hit the woodwork from close range.

In between times, Neymar had opened the scoring via the bar with a sumptuous dipping effort from 25 yards for his third goal of the tournament.

Weverton made a fine save from Meyer and Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos was fortunate when his mishit clearance flew inches over his own crossbar.

However, Weverton was beaten for the first time in the competition just before the hour mark when Meyer swept home Toljan’s low cross.

Brazil piled on the pressure in the final half hour of normal time as Gabriel Jesus turned Renato Augusto’s dangerous cross just wide, substitute Felipe Anderson fluffed his lines and Neymar’s effort from distance flew just off target.

The hosts had the better chances in extra-time too as Luan burst clear only to see his shot blocked before Anderson was denied when one-on-one with Horn.

Thankfully for Rogerio Micale’s men they were far more clinical from the spot as Augusto, Marquinhos, Rafinha and Luan all netted to hand Neymar the chance to live up to his billing as the host’s poster boy for the Games.

RIO Olympics: Okagbare Leads Nigeria To Relay Final As 'almight' US Crashes Out
Nigeria's hope of getting at least a medal from sprint games at the ongoing Olympics Game in Brazil as the Olympic and World Championships medallist, Blessing Okagbare, on Thursday led team Nigeria into the finals of the women’s 4x100m relay at the Olympic Games after posting  a 42.55sec finish.

The Nigerian sprinters, made up of Okagbare, Gloria Asumu, Jennifer Madu and Agnes Osazuwa, came second in heat two behind Germany who clocked 42.18sec.

Meanwhile, the defending champions, the United States women’s 4×100 relay team, who ran in the same heat as the Nigerians, dramatically crashed out of the Olympics.

The defending Olympic champions tumbled out in their opening heat after a bungled second baton changeover between Allyson Felix and English Gardner.

Replays of the exchange were inconclusive, although Felix appeared to stumble and grimace before she reached Gardner to hand over the baton.

In the other semi-final, Jamaica stormed to victory in 41.79sec.

The Jamaican women – including heavyweight veterans Veronica Campbell-Brown and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce – were pushed all the way by Britain, who finished in 41.93sec.

Jamaica’s newly crowned 100m and 200m champion Elaine Thompson sat out the heat but will return for the final.

Rio Olympics: Nigeria's Dream Team Beats Japan 5 - 4, Etebo Shows Class, Net 4
Goal.com - The Dream Team played an interesting first game at the Olympics to earn their first three points in Manaus on Friday

Despite arriving late for their opening game of the Olympic Games, Nigeria outscored Japan 5-4 in Manaus courtesy of four goals from Oghenekaro Etebo on Friday.

The Nigerians were a late show for the tournament after flight delays meant that Samson Siasia and his team arrived in Amazonia less than seven hours to their first game at the Olympics, 20 years after they struck gold in Atlanta.

Yet, they did not look harried as they dispatched Asian U23 champions Japan in a game of nine goals that saw some naive defending early on as the first half ended with five strikes.

Attacker Sadiq Umar, who had a very good game, put the Nigerians in the lead early in the sixth minute when he pounced on a rebound after goalkeeper Masatoshi Kushibiki had blocked a shot from Imoh Ezekiel.

Moments after the restart, Japan won a penalty when Stanley Amuzie’s tackle on Takumi Minamino inside the Nigeria box was deemed too strong.

Shinzo Koroki stepped up to take the spot kick and he slotted the ball past Emmanuel Daniel who dived the wrong way to make it 1-1.

Nigeria would also score immediately after the restart when an Abdulahi Shehu cross found Etebo inside the box, the midfielder escaped his marker to score for his first of the game.

Just as the game got back underway, Japan equalized via Minamino who was set off on a good run by Ryota Oshima who found the Nigeria back line wide open.

Proceedings then eased up as both sides found their defensive discipline with the frenetic pace of the game.

However, Nigeria would find another opportunity to score late in the first half as Etebo pounced on his own rebound to head into the Japan goal after Umar’s brilliant work inside the box created all manner of trouble for the defenders.

Five minutes into the second half, Umar once again showed his dexterity as he won a penalty after his heel was clipped by a Japanese defender.

It was that man Etebo who stepped up to take the responsibility and he wasted no effort in slotting past Kushibiki for his hat trick.

Japan coach Makoto Teguramori made quick change and brought on star forward Takuma Asano for Riki Harakawa. This was an inspired move that rejuvenated the Samurai Blues attack as they chased the equalizer.

However, it was Nigeria who extended their lead minutes later with Etebo notching his fourth of the game from 30 yards after Kushibiki’s clearance left his goal line empty.

Asano ensured that Japan would remain in the game with a 70th minute side-heel inside the box off a pass from Hiroki Fujiharu.

The Samurai Blues continued to chase the game and substitute Musashi Suzuki scored late in added on time to make it 5-4.

However, it was to be a little too late as the referee brought the game to a close afterwards.

Nigeria now lead Group B with three points after Sweden and Colombia played out a 2-2 draw earlier in the day.

They will hope to get some needed rest before facing Sweden in their next game in Manaus on Sunday.
