The Nigerian Army is holding two officers – a major and a captain – in connection with alleged sabotage of the ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the North-East.

A military source said on Wednesday that the Army authorities were intensifying efforts to rid the service of saboteurs in the ongoing counter-terrorism operations.

It was gathered that the Army commenced a painstaking but discreet investigations into the activities of some of its personnel following the Boko Haram attack on troops’ location in Gashigar, on October 22, 2016.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, had said in a statement on Saturday that 13 soldiers were wounded during a surprise Boko Haram attack on troops at Gashigar in the north of Borno State.

Usman had stated that some soldiers were missing after the attack.

The statement did not give the exact number of those missing during the Gashigar attack.

It was learnt that both President Mohammadu Buhari and the Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, were alarmed by the Gashigar attack, which involved an entire unit.

It was gathered that the Army authorities decided to conduct a discreet investigation into the telephone conversation of some of the security personnel and their civilian counterparts and uncovered some suspicious activities through the screening.

A military source said on Wednesday that the Army was intensifying investigation to unravel two established cases against the arrested suspects, which were the leakage of information on troops’ movement to the insurgents and the raising of funds to finance Boko Haram operations through cattle rustling.

The source added, “The President was furious and discussed  the matter with the COAS when some of the heads of that units were ambushed by the Boko Haram.

“The Army leadership took out time to screen the communications lines of the officers for several days without making it known.

“The suspicion was that they have links with some civilians and the links were traced. They are giving them vital information concerning the movement of soldiers.

“How come that the Borno State Governor and other officials have not been attacked, yet they ambushed the Chief of Army Staff. They have not attacked civilians but they attacked the COAS.”

When our correspondent contacted the Acting Army spokesman, he said investigation into the matter was ongoing.

He added that the Army would not release information on the matter in view of the fact that there was an ongoing planned rescue operation in the area.

He said, “Investigation is ongoing and once we conclude, the suspects would be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction.”

Usman, who denied reports that 83 soldiers were missing in action, said the military did not lose any soldier to the Gashigar attack.

He, however, stated that the military suspects would be subject to military laws in accordance with the law.

Usman had said in a statement on Tuesday that a total of 32 persons, comprising two military officers, two soldiers, two policemen and 26 civilians were in custody for allegedly sabotaging the ongoing operations.

Bloody Weekend As Unknown Armed Bandits Opens Fires On Troops, Kill 11 Soldiers, 2 Missing

Bloody Weekend As Unknown Armed Bandits Opens Fires On Troops, Kill 11 Soldiers, 2 Missing
It was such a bloody weekend  for the Nigerian military as not less than 11 officers and soldiers have been confirmed dead after gunmen shot at them during a raid operation, officials said.

However, the troops also killed eight suspected bandits and arrested 57 others during a shootout in parts of Bosso local government area of Niger state, officials said.

The spokesman for the Nigerian Army, Colonel Sani Usman, said contrary to claims that soldiers extrajudicially killed civilians during the clash, the gun fight actually ensued when armed bandits who are also gunrunners, opened fire on soldiers during a raid of notorious hideouts of criminals.

Two soldiers of the Nigeria Army have not been accounted for since the clash as they remained missing, even as troops were able to recover a huge arms cache from those killed and arrested, Mr. Usman said.

Colonel Usman’s statement reads:
“Following covert surveillance and intelligence reports on the activities of some gun runners and armed bandits in Kopa, Dagma and Gagaw villages of Bosso Local Government Area, Niger State, troops of 31 Artillery Brigade, 1 Division Nigerian Army, in conjunction with Nigeria Air Force detachment on Internal Security Operation MESA went on quick cordon and search in the affected areas to recover suspected weapon cache and arrest the suspected persons and the armed bandits”, he said.

“Contrary to statements attributed to some questionable vested interests, the troops were on legitimate official duty aimed at safeguarding lives and property of citizen in the area.

“While approaching and deploying to carry out their lawful duty, the troops came under simultaneous and sporadic shootings in all the three locations. They however responded as necessary in line with the rules of engagement. Sadly, an officer and 8 soldiers of the Nigerian Army and 2 Airmen of the Nigeria Air Force lost their lives in the line of national duty.

“Additionally, one soldier is still missing while 2 of their colleagues were seriously wounded.

“The suspected gun runners and armed bandits also burnt down 4 operational vehicles and vandalized 2 others. Bandits also carted away 4 AK-47 rifles and one Fabrique Nationale (FN) rifle belonging to the deceased soldiers.

The troops also killed 8 of the armed bandits and arrested 57 others. They also recovered large quantity of arms and ammunition.
“The recovered items include; 3 AK-47 rifles,10 Local AK-47 Rifles, 9 Locally made Pistols, 6 Revolver guns, which fires 7.62mm (Special ammunition), 45 Loaded Dane guns, 10 Clubs and Cudgels, 41 Arrows, 18 Bow cases, 122 Cutlasses and Machetes as well as 20 Daggers.

“Other items recovered include 31 Axes, 63 rounds of 7.62 (Special) Ammunition, 10 Bajaj Motorcycles, Assorted Charms and Amulets, 2 Vehicles, 38 mobile telephone handsets, a wristwatch, 5 Identity Cards, Passport Photographs, Cash sum of N23,870.00k, 5 Japanese Yen and 35 different denominations of old Nigerian currency, 15 Catapults, 8 Torchlights, 2 Gun Powder bottles, 4 empty cases of Ammunition and 41 Cartridges. The troops also seized a military Waist Belt and a pair of military Combat Boots.

“It is important to stress that the nefarious activities of the gun runners and the armed bandits has direct bearing with the influx of weapons and general insecurity in some parts of the Federal Capital Territory and the North West geo-political zone of the country. The same gun runners have been confirmed to be the suppliers of arms to armed robbery gangs that were involved in series of armed robbery attacks along Minna-Bida road and the general environment.

“Although the situation is under control, the military will not rest on its oars until all those involved are arrested and brought to justice.

The military will continue to deal with any violent threat to our national security. All law abiding citizens are enjoined to go about their lawful duties as the cordon and search operation continues in the general area and if necessary expand to other identified areas to keep our people safe

Nigerian Troops Suffer Heavy Casualty As Large Numbers of Boko Haram Attack In Borno

Nigeria's deadliest militant group, Boko Haram have inflicted heavy casualties on Nigerian forces after launching an early morning attack on their position in the north-eastern state of Borno, report according to BBC says.

According to a soldier and a resident have confirmed the attack to the BBC, the militants stormed the base in Kareto village in large numbers with "heavy weapons which we didn't have", said the soldier who spoke to the BBC Hausa on condition of anonymity.

Sani Usman, spokesman of the army, had earlier confirmed the attack, but refused to go into details.

"We lost some men. I don't know how many, and many others were injured. Some of us fled in disarray. We realised that we were outnumbered and outgunned," another soldier is quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

However, a resident of Kareto, some 60km (37 miles) from neighbouring Niger, told the BBC Hausa service that troops managed to regain control of the village with the support of fighter jets.

Several of the militants were killed in the fighting which lasted for several hours, the resident added.

Army SACKS Ex-Spokesman Who Champion Buhari's Missing Certificate Saga
Former spokesman of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier-General Olajide Laleye, has been sacked from service for the role he played in the controversy surrounding the school leaving certificate of President Muhammadu Buhari in the events leading up to the 2015 general election.

Recall that Laleye held a press conference then where he disclosed that the Army could not find Buhari’s West African School Certificate Examination result. This was after the then ruling People’s Democratic Party accused Buhari, a retired Major General, of not having the basic academic qualification for candidates vying to be President – a secondary school leaving certificate. Buhari was then the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

A source in the army said Laleye was a marked man the moment President Buhari assumed leadership of Nigeria.

“The Buhari camp and elements within the army sympathetic to him were incensed by Laleye’s press conference. It was clear he was not going to be let off easy if the APC won the election. The present decision is not at all surprising, ” the source said.

Spokesperson of the Army, Colonel Sani Usman who revealed the development to a leading Nigerian newspaper also added that among other senior officers retired is Brigadier General Aliyu Momoh who was accused of complicity in an alleged rigging of the 2014 governorship election in Ekiti State.

Momoh’s career was terminated after a report of a military panel that investigated the alleged unprofessional conduct of officers and soldiers during the elections in Ekiti and Osun State indicted him alongside other soldiers.

Chaired by Major General Adeniyi Oyebade, the panel recommended the compulsory retirement of two officers from the army and the placing of 15 officers on watch list while nine others were to be handed over to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission for further investigations.

FG Closes in On Fayose As Army General SACKED Over Ekiti Election Rigging

Citing the report of a panel of inquiry which established unprofessional conduct during the governorship election in Ekiti State last year, authorities of the Nigerian Army have confirmed the compulsory retirement of Brigadier General Aliyu Momoh.

Confirming the development yesterday in Abuja, the acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Usman, said, “yes he has been retired from the Army, contrary to reports going round that he resigned.”

The report was submitted to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, on January 11 this year by the chairman of the panel raised by the military to investigate allegations of financial inducement to influence the outcome of the said poll in favour of incumbent Governor Ayodele Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The panel, headed by Major General Adeniyi Oyebade, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1Division of the Nigerian Army, made far-reaching recommendations and suggested appropriate punitive measures.

“Two officers were recommended for compulsory retirement from the Nigerian Army, three were to lose their command and one was recommended for prosecution for collecting financial gratification.

“Other recommendations include placing 15 officers on watch list, nine officers were to be further investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“While six officers were to face an audit committee and 62 officers (mostly of the rank of Majors-below) were to be given Letters of Displeasure and to appear before their respective General Officers Commanding for counseling,” the document read in part.

It would be recalled that a whistle blower, Captain Sagir Koli, had leaked information to newsmen, saying his boss compromised professional integrity after allegedly collecting financial gratification from the then PDP candidate coupled with a reported promotion promise by erstwhile Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro.
