Saraki's Headache Lingers As Aggrieved Senators REJECT Peace Move, Give Fresh Condition

Saraki's Headache Lingers As Aggrieved Senators REJECT Peace Move, Give Fresh Condition

saraki
In spite of fresh overtures with juicy committees, Senators opposed to the emergence of Dr. Bukola Saraki as the President of the Senate were yesterday insisted on seeing through the ongoing trial of Saraki and the Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu.

They said the case was already beyond them since the Federal Government is in charge of prosecution.

They also said it was too late to withdraw the petition that made the police to investigate the alleged forgery in the first instance.

Some members of the aggrieved Unity Forum asked Saraki to go beyond the shuffling of committees.

They said there could be an out-of-court settlement if Saraki respects the wish of the All Progressives Congress to concede some principal offices to members of the Unity Forum.

The two leaders are standing trial in the High Court of Justice of the Federal Capital Territory for alleged forgery of the Senate Standing Rules 2015 (as amended).

Others in the dock with them are the immediate past Clerk to the National Assembly, Salisu Abubakar Maikasuwa, and the Deputy Clerk to the National Assembly, Benedict Efeture.

The trial has been adjourned to September 28 by Justice Halilu Yusuf of the FCT High Court.

In a deft political move aimed at reconciliation with the senators against him, Saraki on Thursday reconstituted some committees to accommodate his opponents.

The breakdown saw two prominent members of the Unity Forum, Sen. Kabiru Marafa and Suleiman Hunkuyi now given what was termed “strategic and juicy” committees.

The leadership changes in some committees are as follows: Hope Uzodinma (Customs); Adamu Aliero (Aviation); Oluremi Tinubu (Environment); Kabiru Marafa (Petroleum Downstream); Barau Jibril (Tertiary Education); Binta Garba (Women Affairs); Joshua Dariye (Public Procurement); James Manager (Solid Minerals); Eyinnaya Abaribe (Power); Suleiman Adokwe (Information and National Orientation); Suleiman Hukunyi (National Identity); Babajide Omoworare (Legislative Compliance); Baba Garba (Rules and Business) and Tijani Kaura (Federal Character).

The new deputy chairmen of some committees are Ahmed Ogembe (Marine Transport); and Phillip Aduda (Petroleum downstream).

A highly-placed source in the Unity Forum said: “Since the reshuffling of some committees on Thursday, I have lost sleep because Senators loyal to Saraki and Ekweremadu have been mounting pressure on us to forget about the case in court.

“One of the loyalists said since the issue of committees was part of the conditions for peace; we should embrace Saraki and Ekweremadu. The pro-Saraki elements claimed that they are ready for more concessions.

“It appears the shuffling of the committees was a masterstroke to divide the Unity Forum. But they cannot break our ranks.”

Another ranking Senator said a principal officer met with him on Thursday and simply asked: ‘Now that we have reconstituted the committees, will you people (Unity Forum) help us resolve this case now?

“The emissary from the South-East was eager to extract a commitment from me and some members of the Unity Forum with me.

“I reminded the principal officer that the ball is in the court of the Federal Government which is prosecuting the case.

It was however gathered that some Unity Forum members who met after the the committees were shuffled have chosen to press ahead with the forgery case.

At the session, the members said Saraki was yet to “respect the wish of APC on the sharing of principal offices.

The source added: “When we met on Thursday night, we weighed all options and concluded that Saraki has not demonstrated substantial readiness to reconcile with the Unity Forum.

“He redeployed a key and effective member of this forum, Sen. Babajide Omoworare from Rules and Business to a redundant committee. Some Senators were really shocked because Omoworare is a team player.

“The appointment of committee chairmen is not far-reaching because any Senator’s choice is at the discretion of Saraki.

“We can resolve the crisis but after this step, Saraki may reshuffle all the committees again.

“We are at his mercy on committees. Saraki has the sole right to constitute committees without deferring to Senators.

“If we go back on this case because of appointment into committees, we would have proved to Nigerians that we were pursuing the case for selfish reasons.

“We are however committed to peace in the Senate. We concluded that if Saraki is serious, let him respect the wish of APC leadership and heed the advice of President Muhammadu Buhari in choosing principal officers

“In a  letter to Saraki, the APC leadership made the following recommendations:  Senator Ahmed  Lawan (Majority Leader)–North-East; Prof. Sola Adeyeye (Chief Whip)–South-West; Sen. George Akume  (Deputy Majority Leader)—North-Central; and Sen. Abu Ibrahim(Deputy Chief Whip)—North-West.

“And of course, it is not out of place to make Ali Ndume the Deputy President of the Senate to replace Ike Ekweremadu.

‘Even Senators like Ndume are ready to sacrifice their posts for the unity of the Senate if Saraki can bend more to accommodate all.

“You never can tell, we can all decide that Ekweremadu should remain in office if the rapprochement is accommodating.

“If the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara could comply with the directive of the party, Saraki should also do so.

“In fact, we can begin to talk of out-of-court settlement or ask the Judiciary to allow us to address the case at hand internally.”

Why I Actually Dumped The PDP For APC - Ribadu

Why I Actually Dumped The PDP For APC - Ribadu

Why I Actually Dumped The PDP For APC - Ribadu
Following Malam Nuhu Ribadu's official return to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC today, the former anticorruption czar has said he returned to his former party for the love of his friends who had all gone back to the party.

The former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Friday returned to the All Progressives Congress.

Mr. Ribadu said in a statement he posted on his Facebook page that he rejoined the party online on Friday, and then hosted officials of the party from his Bako Ward in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Then on Friday, he visited the Yola South secretariat of the APC to present himself to the party.

He had left the party for the Peoples Democratic Party in 2014.

Mr. Ribadu, a former presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, explained that his return to the APC was triggered by his belief that all politics were local and that almost everyone around him who started politics with him believed the time had come for them to make sacrifices and concession.

He said, “My decision to return to the APC was triggered by my belief that all politics are local. Almost everyone around me, and with whom we started my political journey believed the time had come for us to make sacrifices and make concessions. That is in addition to the unbelievable love that my friends in the APC have showered on me in the past months.

“They demonstrated in words and action that they wanted me back home. The intractable crises in the PDP also made it impossible for one to contribute to the necessary task of building a viable opposition platform for our country.

“I also did a deep and long reassessment of the circumstances that warranted my exit from the APC in the first place. I left the APC in 2014 owing to fundamental disagreements with the ways the chapter of the party in my state was run after it fell into some hands.”

Below is Mr. Ribadu’s statement announcing his return to the APC

Today I heeded the calls on me to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a party of which I was a founding member.

I re-registered as a member of the APC last night through the party’s online portal. After that, the leadership of the party in my Bako ward of Yola South Local Government Area visited me in my Yola residence to welcome me back to their fold.

This afternoon, I visited the Yola South secretariat of the party to present myself and submit to the leadership as a loyal party man.

My decision to return to the APC was triggered by my belief that all politics are local. Almost everyone around me, and with whom we started my political journey believed the time had come for us to make sacrifices and make concessions. That is in addition to the unbelievable love that my friends in the APC have showered on me in the past months.

They demonstrated in words and action that they wanted me back home. The intractable crises in the PDP also made it impossible for one to contribute to the necessary task of building a viable opposition platform for our country.

I also did a deep and long reassessment of the circumstances that warranted my exit from the APC in the first place. I left the APC in 2014 owing to fundamental disagreements with the ways the chapter of the party in my state was run after it fell into some hands.

Some colleagues and I tried hard to reposition the fold and save the then APC administration from an orchestrated impeachment plot. We didn’t succeed.

Events in the last 15 months have addressed many of the issues and healed some of the wounds. More so, with the genuine and sincere invitations I received since last year to retrace my steps into the party, I decided to return after consulting family and political associates at all levels.

I would like to appreciate all those members of the party who privately and publicly prodded me to return to the party. My appreciation also goes to the leadership of our party, from my ward in Bako to the national leadership, for the enthusiasm they showed in having me back.

EXPOSED, Buhari's Minister, Dambazau Questionable $3m US Estate, Another Worth Billions In Abuja, See Photos
An investigation by SaharaReporters into the assets of Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Lieutenant-General Abdulrahman Dambazau (ret.) has discovered that he and his wife own properties in the US whose total worth, in millions of dollars, raise questions about the source of the minister’s funds. Two real estate consultants told our correspondents that the properties traced to Mr. Dambazau have an estimated value in excess of three million dollars in the US alone.

Our investigators found that the minister’s real estate holdings include an impressive and expensive and huge seven-bedroom house he purchased in Winchester, Massachusetts, a few miles outside of Boston. The property cost $1.99 million. Mr. Dambazau’s massive 6,500 square feet home also boasts six bathrooms, an eat-in kitchen, an enclosed backyard, a front porch, central air conditioning, a spa bathtub in the master bedroom, a fireplace, and hardwood floors throughout. Descriptions of the property also state that the “master bedroom has a cathedral ceiling, double walk-in closet, linen closet, a spa-like tub, and a separate shower with three shower heads, and double sinks.”

Our investigation into Mr. Dambazau’s inexplicable real estate assets comes on the heels of public outrage that the minister’s name was removed from the list of serving, and retired military officers recommended for further investigation by a presidential panel that investigated arms and equipment procurement fraud in the Nigerian armed forces between 2007 and 2015.

An earlier report by SaharaReporters disclosed that Mr. Dambazau and other top military officers were in a panic as the investigation panel prepared its latest interim report. Several military and political sources in Abuja revealed that Mr. Dambazau, who served as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) between 2008 and 2010, worked furiously behind the scenes to suppress aspects of the probe panel’s report that implicated him.

In response to public outrage, Nigeria’s Information and Culture Minister, Lai Mohammed, issued a statement denying that the report was influenced by figures outside the investigation panel.

SaharaReporters obtained documents stating that Mr. Dambazau purchased the Winchester property shortly after it was built in 2013. According to the deed of ownership he bought the property on August 29th, 2013 from the building firm for one million nine hundred and ninety thousand dollars ($1,990,000).

In addition to the deed of ownership, SaharaReporters also obtained the Declaration of Homestead form that clearly states, “We, Hadiza B. Dambazau and Abdulrahman Dambazau, are the owner(s) of the premises located at 109 Church Street Winchester, MA 01890, by virtue of a deed.”

Our investigation also revealed that Mr. Dambazau sold the property to new buyers for $2 million on May 28th, 2015—exactly one day before President Muhammadu Buhari was sworn in in Abuja. The property sale document includes Mr. Dambazau’s passport number A06275929 and is notarized by Amy Kornbluth, the Vice Consul of the US Embassy in Abuja.

In addition to the home in Winchester, Mr. Dambazau’s wife, Hadiza Dambazau, recently purchased a condominium in the city of Boston. The property is part of the Millennium Avery Condominium complex. Documents obtained by our investigators show that Mrs. Dambazau has had the property in her name since its purchase on May 19th, 2016. The deed states that the condominium was purchased for $892,000 and is Unit #410 located at 580 Washington Street, Boston MA, 02111.

Mr. Dambazau also owns other assets and properties in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. The assets are hard to explain, given the relative modesty of the salary earned by Nigerian military officers. The minister’s properties include Hajjar Plaza, an impressive building along Ahmadu Bello Way that contains numerous offices, and Lebrex Plaza, located in Utako, along Ajose Adeogun Street, which also has many shops and businesses. SaharaReporters also found that the Interior Minister owns a huge real estate at 15 Dodoma Street, in Wuse Zone 6 in Abuja.

Our investigation discovered that Mr. Dambazau often used Mohammed Dauda as a front to purchase several of his real estate assets in Nigeria. Several sources told our correspondent that Mr. Dauda is the chairman of Labrex International Ltd.

Our correspondent asked President Buhari’s spokesman, Femi Adesina, to respond to Mr. Dambazau’s extensive acquisition of real estate assets, but he merely stated, “I have no information on this issue,” adding that he could not comment further. Garba Shehu, who also serves as Mr. Buhari’s media and publicity aide, pointed our correspondent to the president’s statement “issued two days ago that he would not cover up or hide corrupt conduct by those in his government.” Mr. Shehu stated that nothing had changed since Mr. Buhari issued that release.

We spoke to Dambazau, but he hung up on our reporters.

Judge Threatens To RESIGN Over Flout Of Court Orders By Buhari's DSS

Judge Threatens To RESIGN Over Flout Of Court Orders By Buhari's DSS

Judge Threatens To RESIGN Over Flout Of Court Orders By Buhari's DSS
Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday berated the Department of State Security (DSS) for flouting an order of the court to remand a defendant in prison.

Mr. Dimgba had ordered that a retired Air Commodore, Umar Mohammed, who was arraigned before him on Thursday, be remanded in Kuje Prison pending the hearing of his bail application.

But the SSS failed to produce him in court on Friday while his counsel argued his bail application.

Mr. Dimgba said he took strong exception to the service’s disregard of the court’s order by keeping the defendant in its custody, describing it as an embarrassment to democracy.

“I take a strong exception to this type of behaviour; when the court orders that someone be kept in prison custody, the person ought to be kept in prison and not in the office.

“If the people at the DSS want to become judge and do their job as well, I am ready to vacate my office for them, but as long as I am still here, I take an exception to them flouting the orders of the court.

“Once processes have been filed in court, it is no longer in their hands and the order of the court must be obeyed,’’ Mr. Dimgba said.
He asked the prosecuting counsel, E.A Orji, to convey the grievances of the court to the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.

The judge adjourned ruling on the bail application until 2 p.m.

Counsel to Mr. Mohammed, Hassan Liman, had told the court that the SSS whisked Mr. Mohammed away immediately after the court proceedings ended on Thursday.

But the prosecuting counsel explained that the defendant was taken to the SSS office for some documentation.

Mr. Mohammed is charged with money laundering, possession of fire arms and violation of provision of Official Secret Act.

The defendant is a retired Air Force officer and was a member of the presidential team investigating the arms deal in the country.

Buhari A Liar, We're Not In Dialogue With FG - N'Delta Avengers

Buhari A Liar, We're Not In Dialogue With FG - N'Delta Avengers

Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), has described as a deception, government’s claim of negotiating with the militants in the Niger Delta oil region.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Thursday, while granting farewell audience to the outgoing Ambassador of Germany to Nigeria, Mr. Michael Zinner, at the Presidential Villa Abuja, claimed that his administration was holding talks with the militants for possible compromise.

But Avengers, which has been the deadliest group since resurgence of militancy in the oil region in a statement issued by the group’s spokesman, Mudoch Agbinibo refuted the claim, saying the group was not aware of any ongoing peace talks.

The statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to media report that the president is in touch with Niger Delta agitators including the Niger Delta Avengers, but the truth is that we are not aware of any peace talk.

“If there is any such peace talk, it means the president is talking to their mercenaries set to disturb the genuine struggle of the agitators. President Buhari-led government is not sincere to the Nigeria people and their foreign allies.

“If we are to engage in any peace talk we made it clear that the international community must be part of it. The President knows our demands. So they should stop deceiving the international oil companies, the general public and the international community”, the statement read.

CLIMATE CHANGE: OSUN ASSEMBLY CANVASSES SYNERGY BTW ACADEMICS, PARLIAMENT

CLIMATE CHANGE: OSUN ASSEMBLY CANVASSES SYNERGY BTW ACADEMICS, PARLIAMENT

Salaam Najeem
Chairman, House Committee on Environment, State of Osun House of Assembly, Hon. Ajibola Akinloye has canvassed for the synergy between the academics and state parliaments on the issue of climate change, saying that was when the message of attitudinal change of human beings to the nature could resonate.

Barring his mind on the theme: "climate change, renewable energy and energy efficiency" at a symposium organized by Osun state University on climate change, Akinloye represented by the  Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr. Goke Butika stressed that the collaboration of the academic researchers who were working the causes and effects of climate change with politicians who could make it a campaign issue would afford the people in the cities and rural areas to pick interest in the danger of climate change.

Akinloye then urged the people to be conscious of the way they treat their environment, saying that the effects of climate change touch on existence of man and living organisms and should not be treated as fiction or fun.

The lawmaker also expressed the readiness of his committee to extract from the transcripts of the researchers to enact bill that could domesticate some of the international treaties with a view to offering a piece of legal framework to better living.

Akinloye then tasked the researchers and other stakeholders to take the issue of climate change out of elitist environment, noting that uninformed people need the message more than the elite class, saying the only way to reach wider audience was to adopt language of the market.
