The games at the on going Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, has been described by fans and pundits as lacklustre and without excitement.

Matches in the foremost continental championship has also produced few goals and with somewhat tepid performances by teams including defending champions Cote D'Ivoire.

Responding to probings on the quality of play in Gabon, particularly, with the absence of Nigeria at the championship, National Chairman of Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Rev. Sam lkpea, remarked that the standard of play has been below par, citing the absence of the Super Eagles as the major reason.

" Beyond being patriotic, l think the whole world, particularly, Africa, are missing the Super Eagles. You know, this team is unique and anywhere and anytime they play, the quality of soccer display and the excitement they showcase is unequalled, " Ikpea said.

" Much more, African football are also missing the glitz and glamour and world class supportership of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, "he added.

On his part, Nigeria's Pillar Of Sports, Chief Donatus Agu Ejidike, stated that African football are truly missing Nigeria and the excitement her footballers bring to competitions.

" It is a shame that Nigeria is not participating in the championship. The quality of play and the competitive level of the championship would have been top notch, " Ejidike, who doubles as the President of the Karate Federation of Nigeria, stated.

He went on to add that the Super Eagles would definitely bounce back to reclaim its pride of place on continental and global football.

WCQ: Algeria Petitions FIFA Over Mikel's Goal: Watch Video Of The Controversial Goal Again Here

An online petition set up by an agitated fan of the Algeria national team aimed at preventing Gambian referee, Bakary Papa Gassama, has gathered momentum, with over 100 people putting their name to it, reports owngoalnigeria.com.

The 37-year-old allowed John Obi Mikel goal, which the petition claimed was from an offside position, to stand as Nigeria secured a 3-1 win over Algeria in the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Algeria Coach, Georges Leekens, has narrowed his side’s defeat to that second goal scored by Mikel a few minutes to the half time break, as it somehow killed the game off as a contest after 45 minutes.

Video replays analyzed by soccer experts in Algeria claimed Mikel was indeed offside when he scored the second goal for Nigeria and it has led to the online petition.

They want FIFA to ban Gassama from games in the World Cup 2018 qualifiers, particularly matches against them, as they are yet to win a game he has handled.

Meanwhile, on-loan Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Nabil Bentaleb, who scored a screamer against Nigeria, has revealed the secret behind his well-hit drive, which ended up as a consolation for Algeria in their 1-3 loss to Nigeria.
Bentaleb took advantage of a space in front of the defence of Nigeria to lash in an unstoppable drive from over 30 yards beyond Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi.

Now, the Schalke 04 man has revealed he took advantage of the poor positioning of Akpeyi, as noticed by his coach before driving his effort home.

“We were told about his poor positioning by our coaches during the half time break, and when the space opened up I tried my luck from range. I won’t say I expected it to go in but it was worth the try,” he told the Algerian press.

RUSSIA 2018: Ensure You Stop Nigeria At All Cost - Cameroonian FA Orders Lion

The Punch Newspaper - With qualification hopes hanging by a thread following their 1-1 draw against visiting Zambia in  their Russia 2018 World Cup Group B qualifier in Limbe on Saturday, the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT)  has declared  Cameroon’s  double-header  against their bitter rivals  Nigeria   next year must-win games.

The Super Eagles  opened  up a four-point lead at the top of the table following their 3-1 defeat of Algeria in Uyo on Saturday.

Nigeria  have six points to sit  top of the group, followed by Cameroon in the second place on two points. Both Zambia and Algeria have one point apiece. The winners of the group will  book  the sole ticket  to Russia  2018.

The Eagles host  the Indomitable Lions in the first leg qualifier  on August 28, 2017, with the Central Africans hosting the Nigerians in the return leg fixture on September  2, 2017.

Apparently  afraid  the   four-time African champions  could miss out on a place at Russia 2018,  having appeared at   Espana ‘82, Italia ‘90, USA ‘94, France ‘98,  Korea/Japan 2002, South Africa  2010 and  Brazil 2014, FECAFOOT on Monday  told   Cameroon coach Hugo Bross that he must pick up maximum points in the double-header against Nigeria.

FECAFOOT, who expressed their disappointment at  the draw against Zambia, wrote  on their official website on Monday,  “The coming months will be months of hard work. In January and February next year, the  national team will have to confirm their  ambition to restore the national coat of arms during their  participation  at the  Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

“The  Russia 2018  World Cup  qualifiers next year  will be of great importance with two decisive matches against Nigeria, currently first in our group.

“To maintain the positive report of the performances of our various national teams, one goal is needed – to shine in Gabon and win these two matches against Nigeria.”

And the  Indomitable Lions’ Belgian manager Bross  called for focus ahead of the fixtures against the Eagles, tipping Cameroon for victories in both encounters.

“We already knew before the two matches against Nigeria would be decisive, that we would have to win to have a chance to go to the World Cup,” the 64-year-old former Belgium defender  was quoted by the Cameroon Tribune as saying on Monday.

Mikel Obi Named As New Super Eagles Captain

Barely 24 hours to the crucial 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifier against the Pharaohs of Egypt in Kaduna, former skipper Ahmed Musa has announced Mikel Obi as the new captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kaduna today March 24, the CSKA Moscow forward honoured Mikel the position as the new captain of the team as the Eagles get set to file out on Friday March 25 for the first time, since the return of Samson Siasia as the head coach.

Delighted by the gesture and his level of maturity, the Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi thanked Ahmed Musa and the team for the rare opportunity, adding that it would be the beginning of great things to come for the country.

“Thanks to Musa and the team. It will be a new Super Eagles with a new approach,” Mikel said. It would be recalled that the sudden retirement of Vincent Enyeama was said to have been triggered after former Super Eagles coach Oliseh told the goalkeeper to leave the camp in Belgium for questioning his choice of Ahmed Musa as captain in October 2015. Enyeama denied this allegation saying his confrontation with gaffer Sunday Oliseh arose after his dead mother was insulted.

Mikel Obi will now begin to direct the affairs of a rather young and new team of the Super Eagles. His main target would be to help the team get needed results against Egypt, and ultimately qualify Nigeria for the 2017 African Nations Cup billed for Gabon next year.
