JAMB registrar delivers UNIOSUN 10th foundation Day lecture

JAMB registrar delivers UNIOSUN 10th foundation Day lecture

UNIOSUN
The Registrar and Chief Executive of Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB), Professor Is-haq Oloyede yesterday delivered the 10th Foundation Day Lecture of Osun State University in Osogbo, capital of Osun State.

Delivering the lecture titled: "Universities and the Challenges of Sustainable Development," Professor Oloyede posited that until authorities, management and workers in the nation's universities imbibe positive mental attitude in playing their roles, it would be hard to ensure sustainable development.

The 10th Foundation Day Lecture of the Osun State University, Osogbo which was held at the Olagunsoye Oyinlola Auditorium attracted top personalities from different parts of the country as the event was part of the activities marking the 6thi convocation of the University.

Oloyede posited that the attitudes of members of the university communities would determine their altitude and tasked universities to generate research that would ensure environmental sustainability.

The JAMB Registrar who was represented by a lecturer from the University of Ibadan, Professor Afiz Oladosu said "the environment is fundamental as everything ultimately depends on the environment to survive."

Oloyede said, "Universities have crucial roles to play in addressing the challenges of sustainable development. The only requirement needed in this regard is attitude which determines our altitude.

"With positive mental attitude, I recommend that rather than relying on concrete or fence (only) to mark the perimeter of the university campus, universities should be planting streets for economic and ecological purposes. The trees will serve as carbon sink, taking out and storing carbon.

"Apart from forestation for the purpose of boundary demarcation, universities should cultivate the plantation culture through a deliberate policy of growing economic trees like teak, date palm and so on. Nigeria universities should formulate robust environmental policies and implement the provisions therein to the letter.

"Universities should develop their own capacity for generating power rather than relying on the epileptic public power supply system or unsustainable power generators. Alternative energy should be generated from solar, thermal and biofuel sources in order to accelerate development."

Oloyede charged universities to embark on sustainable waste management, including e-waste administration, through research and entrepreneurial ventures adding that ivory towers should domesticate the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as espoused by UNESCO.

The JAMB boss further advised universities to impact more on their immediate communities through town and gown programmes that would sensitise Nigerians on the impacts of climate change and the need to embrace sustainable development philosophy.

Kazeem Amodu Ige
A 300-level student of the department of Civil Engineering at the Osun State University, Osogbo, Kazeem Amodu Ige has been killed in a fight that erupted among some students of the institution on Monday evening.

Daily Trust correspondent gathered that Kazeem was allegedly stabbed in the chest by a 400-level student of the department of Physics Electronics of the same university, Yusuff Adekunle, also known as Stone.

The pandemonium broke out around the students’ hostel at University road in Oke-Baale area of Osogbo, capital of Osun State on Monday evening as a result of the bloody class by the UNIOSUN students.

The reason for the fight among the students is still uncertain.

A source told Daily Trust that the deceased student was not among those fighting and that Kazeem was only trying to separate the feuding students when he was stabbed.

Daily Trust correspondent learnt that the machete cut on Kazeem was very deep and that he was rushed to Our Lady of Fatimah Catholic Hospital, Jaleyemi area for medical treatment to save his life but he was confirmed dead by the doctors in the hospital.

His corpse was initially deposited at the mortuary of the same hospital for autopsy but it was later transferred to the state hospital, Asubiaro area by the authorities of the university.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Fimihan Adeoye while confirming the incident said he had ordered a full scale investigation into the matter and assured that the culprits would not go scot-free.

Adeoye, who spoke through the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Folasade Odoro said necessary measures have been put in place to prevent reprisal attacks among the students and assured that police would ensure safety of lives and properties in the area.

A student of the university said this sad occurrence was unfortunate at the time that UNIOSUN community was still mourning the death of a 400 Level student that was kidnapped and killed by ritualists recently while 2 missing male students of the university were yet not found.

UNIOSUN Sex Video Scandal: The Randy Lecturer, Dr. Ojoniyi SACKED
The Governing Council of the Osun State University, Osogbo, has terminated the appointment of Dr. Olabode Ojoniyi of the Department of Languages and Linguistics, Ikire Campus, caught on video having an amorous relationship with one of his students, Mercy Ikwue.

Our correspondent gathered on Sunday that the Governing Council headed by Mallam Yusuf Ali SAN, sacked the lecturer, who appeared nude  on a bed  in a hotel room and caressing Miss Ikwue.

A member of the Governing Council confirmed the sacking of Ojoniyi to our correspondent in Osogbo on Sunday.

He said, “The Council met last week and the report of the panel that investigated Ojoniyi’s amorous affair with the female student was deliberated upon. His appointment was terminated because that is the penalty stated in the Code of Conduct of Staff of Osun State University.”

Apart from the member of the Governing Council, three other lecturers including two professors confirmed to our correspondent that Ojoniyi had been sacked.

Part II articles 15 and 23  of the Code of Conduct for Staff and Students of UNIOSUN read, “ An academic staff shall not conduct himself/ herself in relation to students in such a manner that derogates from his status as a lecturer, examiner and adviser. Specifically, sexual harassment of students by (members of) staff is totally forbidden. Any (member of) staff found guilty of sexual harassment shall be dismissed from the service of the university and may be handed over to relevant state authority for prosecution.

“An academic (member of) staff shall not demand from students any gratification whether in cash or in kind including sexual gratification in the discharge of his/her lawful duties. Breach of this code shall warrant appropriate sanction ranging from warning to termination of appointment depending on the gravity of the offence.”

Ojoniyi’s sex act was captured in a video which is believed to have been surreptitiously recorded by the female student.

The female student was said to have been pressurised by Ojoniyi for sex and she eventually agreed and followed him to their agreed place with a laptop computer from which she pretended to be watching a movie, Things Fall Apart. Unknown to him, Miss Ikwue was actually recording their sexual activities.

Ojoniyi had accused one of the lecturers of the university, who was recently dismissed for an alleged misconduct as the person behind the drama. According to him, the lady was contracted to blackmail him. But Ojoniyi did not deny being the one in the video.

The video clip went viral afterwards and Ojoniyi, when contacted by our correspondent did not deny that he was the one in the video and did not say his image was manipulated. He only blamed his detractors for the incident.

The Acting Registrar of UNIOSUN, Bayo Shittu, who doubles as the secretary of the council, did not pick repeated calls put across to his telephone line.

He had yet to reply to the text sent to him to officially confirm the sacking as of the time of filing this report.

A professor at the university recently resigned his appointment over the alleged rape of a female student in his office.

Some lecturers and students of the university told our correspondent that the professor knew that he would be sacked if the case was investigated and he hurriedly resigned to prevent the embarrassment which would follow.
