Wikipedia rebrands Badagry in Global Face

By Kikekon Manoah

At the 20th Anniversary of Wikipedia celebrated at Marina in Badagry, Lagos State on 15th Jan. 2021, the world's most famous encyclopedia, the Wikipedia has rebranded the face of Badagry at the global stage using its GLAM Project (Gallery, Library, Archives and Museum) in uploading the images in the Museum to the global face.

The event which marks 20th year of founding Wikipedia by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sager served as an opportunity to set up a Wikipedia hub in Badagry in order to put Badagry on a global stage where the participants were taught how to upload and improve articles on Wikipedia.

Moreso, it was an avenue to put Badagry and her rich history on the global stage.
In an exclusive interview with Newsproof, the president of Wikipedia foundation in Nigeria Mr. Shola Olaniyan, said “we are here to celebrate the birth of Wikipedia-the free online encyclopedia that everyone can write on.

As at today, English Wikipedia alone has 6.2million articles, altogether Wikipedia has about 55million articles. On monthly basics, Wikipedia has over 10billoin monthly visitor, and more than 82,000 active editors on English Wikipedia alone. One aspect why we are here is to celebrate and establish a Wikipedia hub in Badagry and we are also looking at the historical relevancy of Badagry. Besides, we seize this opportunity to introduce our GLAM project where we document and digitalize some of the history around slavery in Badagry. We were once in Badagry during our program called Wiki Love Earth, where we took photos of notable places in Badagry which was uploaded on our digital repository”.

Olaniyan noted that participant will learn how to improve articles related to Badagry on Wikipedia. "Since we are establishing a hub, we are here to train the youths and we are calling on all the youths in Badagry to be part of the program” he said.

Speaking with Mr. Samuel Setonji Okepevi, the chairman organizing committee, “What we are doing here today is to put Badagry on the Global stage. Right now we are on our GLAM project, which is putting the images we have in the museums on a global stage.

Actually there would be articles on these pictures but I believe pictures speak more volume. There are various articles on Wikipedia today without picture, but the pictures that are taken here today would be uploaded on the right articles. This will definitely give Badagry a place in the history of human”.

Okepevi further said “Today people complain about the neglect of Badagry by the government, I tell them we can’t continue complaining about the government, we have to start doing something ourselves to uplift Badagry. Project like this will bring various international bodies to Badagry for investment".

While unveiling plans for Badagry, Okepevi said "We have various programs for Badagry and I can assure you, we are coming back in two months time. Based on the turn up we’ve seen for this program,  we are ready to make history in Badagry".

"The participants have taught how to edit and upload articles on Wikipedia, they have also learnt how to  upload pictures on Wikipedia" he said.

He further asserted that the world today has become a global community and responsibilities lie in the hand of everyone of us, we can change the narratives.

Global Amnesty Watch frowns at 'despicable' Congress siege, calls for retrospection of U.S' democracy

By Dansu Peter

The Global Amnesty Watch (GAW) has condemned Wednesday's siege on the U.S. Congress, describing it as "despicable" and an "assault on democracy".

In a statement signed by its Director, John Tom Lever, on Thursday, the group said President Donald Trump showed lack of respect for democratic ideals by instigating and urging his supporters to assault the Capitol.

According to Lever, the incident at the Congress affirms the retrogression of democracy in the U.S under Trump's watch.

The GAW, therefore, noted that it is time for retrospection by the incoming administration led by President-elect, Joe Biden.

He said the new government must improve the country's internal mechanism to guard against a repeat of the assault in its democracy as carried out by Trump and his supporters.

The Global Amnesty Watch, however, advised the incumbent to seek forgiveness from the American people for bringing democracy in the nation to disrepute.

It added that the actions of Trump remain despicable and must be condemned by all lovers of democracy all over the world.

Read the full statement below:

The Global Amnesty Watch views the events in the United States of America that culminated in the attack on the United States Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump as a most despicable desecration of democracy in the United States of America.

By all indication, President Donald Trump has proved a lack of respect for democratic ideals by instigating and urging his supporters to assault democracy in the United States of America in its over 200 year's existence.

The Global Amnesty Watch is of the considered opinion that the attempt to subvert the will of the American people by President Donald Trump must be condemned in its entirety.

The Global Amnesty Watch, having followed the events in the United States of America wishes to state that the various actions of President Donald Trump do not reflect the attributes of a leader of the United States of America, which by all intent and purposes ought to serve as a role model in the preservation and entrenchment of democracy all over the world.

Thus, it is our considered opinion that under President Donald Trump, the United States of America has degenerated and therefore cannot continue to posture as an example of democracy in the world.

The unfortunate happenings since the conclusion of the presidential elections in the United States of America have brought out the defects in the model of democracy practised in the United States of America.

This indeed calls to question some of the United States of America's stance in the preservation and entrenchment of democracy around the world and especially in the African continent.

This much the Global Amnesty Watch has highlighted in some of its reports on the interpretation of the ideals of democracy across the world by some advanced democracies such as the United States of America.

The Global Amnesty Watch uses this medium to reiterate that democracy around the world remains an experiment. Those at the forefront should do well to exhibit sincerity in the criticism of emerging democracies.

The attack on the United States Capitol is indeed blighting on democracy in the United States of America. The incoming administration of President-Elect Joe Biden must begin the process of ensuring that the ideals of democracy are reenacted, and charity must begin at home. Not until this is done, the United States of America should desist from setting standards for interpreting and practice of democracy in the world.

The Global Amnesty Watch further reiterates that democracy has been assaulted in the United States of America. Therefore there must be circumspection and retrospection in this regards by the institutions in the United States of America.

The authorities in the United States of America must improve its internal mechanism to guard against a repeat of the assault in its democracy as carried by President Donald Trump and his supporters.

The Global Amnesty Watch has indeed been vindicated by President Donald Trump's actions, which has been a constant feature in our numerous reports indicating a retrogression of democracy in the United States of America under the watch of President Donald Trump.

It is hoped that lessons have been learnt with the events that culminated in the attack on the Capitol in the United States of America.

The Global Amnesty Watch states that President Donald Trump must seek forgiveness from the American people for bringing democracy in the United States of America to disrepute.

The actions of President Donald Trump remain despicable and must be condemned by all lovers of democracy all over the world.

Covid-19: Remdesvir, New Drug Cures Coronavirus Patients in US Study

By News Proof

An experimental drug, Remdesvir, has proved effective against the new Coronavirus in a major study done by the National Institutes of Health, the US Government have announced .

White House health advisor and top US infectious diseases expert, Dr Anthony Fauci has revealed that data collected from the Coronavirus drug trial testing with the antiviral drug Remdesivir showed 'quite good news' and has set a new standard of care for COVID-19 patients.

According to the study led by the US National Institute of Health, the drug shortens the time it takes for patients to recover by four days on average, and it is the first drug treatment to pass such a strict test against the virus.

Remdesivir, produced by Gilead Sciences was tested in 1,063 hospitalized Coronavirus patients around the world and according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the drug reduced the time it takes patients to recover by 31%, 11 days on average versus 15 days for those just given usual care.

Fauci also said the drug led to fewer deaths among Covid-19 patients.

“What it has proven is that a drug can block this virus,” Fauci said Wednesday night. “This will be the standard of care."

Covid-19 has killed close to 300,000 people since it emerged late last year in China and a treatment that works against it could greatly slow down the death rate.

A statement from the US Food and Drug Administration says that the agency has been talking with California-based Gilead “regarding making remdesivir available to patients as quickly as possible, as appropriate.”

“We are excited and optimistic,” said one expert, Vanderbilt University’s Dr. Mark Denison whose laboratory first tested remdesivir against other coronaviruses in 2013 .

“It’s active against every coronavirus that we’ve ever tested,” he said. “It was very hard for the virus to develop resistance to remdesivir. That means the drug would likely be effective over longer term use.”

The company producing the drugs have revealed  that it would publish it's results and findings in a medical journal soon.

Covid-19: Fear, as Several Recovered Patients Test Positive Again, Experts Explain Why

The last may not have been heard about the treatment of the deadly ravaging pandemic, the Covid-19 as over 50 who had recovered and tested Negative, later tested positive, report according to The Sun UK claimed.

The report stated that some patients of the Coronavirus in South Korea, numbering about 51 were tested positive again, having been declared negative in earlier tests.

Some medical experts suggest that there is likelihood that the virus has the tendency to hide under the cell and reactivate itself. Though, this some others do not subscribe to.

2019: British Govt Disowns Buhari, APC

Buhari and Theresa May

The British government has said it was neither backing the presidential candidates of the All Progressive Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari or that of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking at a one-day dialogue programme tagged: ‘Enhancing electoral participation of PWDs in 2019 general elections’, Political Adviser to the country’s Deputy British High Commissioner, Mr Wale Adebajo, said the British government had no vested interest in either Buhari, Abubakar or any of the other candidates in the February 16 poll.

This was just as international agencies in collaboration with local civil society organisations urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the full inclusion of Peoples Living with Disabilities(PWDs) to easily participate in the electoral system in 2019.

The agencies, which included the British High Commission and Australian High Commission in Nigeria, British Department for International Development (DFID) and Foundation for Justice and Social Development (FOJSOD) said excluding people living with disabilities from the electoral system was not in consonance with global best practices.

The DFID Regional Programme Officer, Mrs. Margaret Fagboyo, said the agency had always believed that PWDs should be beneficiary of the sustainable development in Nigeria, which unfettered access to participate in elections was part of.

“In 2019, INEC must ensure that ballot boxes are placed where they can access easily, the police shouldn’t harass them, they should be accorded respect. They should be seen as critical stakeholders in any election.

“We commend INEC for noticing where there are lapses and trying to improve on them. We can’t leave these people behind while taking critical decisions just because they are having one form of disability. If this happens, definitely, there will be problem.”

Adebajo said the National Disability bill that is awaiting presidential assent will help in resolving some of the issues bedeviling the group in the country.

Adebajo praised the INEC for including PWDs in its strategic plan for 2017-2021 elections, saying the British government and United States Department for International Development (USAID) were favourably disposed to the action.

Resident Electoral Commissioner, Ekiti State, Prof. Abdulganiyu Raji, said INEC has identified those critical areas where PWDs were having problems in the electoral system.

“The overall goal of this programme is to consolidate inclusive electoral process that would be in consonance with the international best practices devoid of any rancour or acrimony but free, fair, transparent and acceptable elections,” Raji said.
