Ile-Ife Ethnic Clash: Yoruba Obas In Ile-Ife Protest Continued Detention Of Colleague As 15 Detainees Released

Ooni of Ife: Ile-Ife Ethnic Clash: Yoruba Obas In Ile-Ife Protest Continued Detention Of Colleague As 15 Detainees Released
Traditional rulers from Ile-Ife, on Thursday, protested the continued detention of Oba Ademola Ademiluyi, who was arrested by the police following the bloody clash on March 8, report according to Punch Newspaper says

The Laroka of Wanikin Ife, Oba Kole Ojutalayo, who led other traditional rulers from Ile-Ife to address a press conference in Ile-Ife, said the detention and the parade of Oba Ademiluyi by the police was a desecration of Yoruba customs.

Ojutalayo said Ife monarchs were aware that the police did not treat any emir the way they had treated Oba Ademiluyi, when ethnic clashes occurred in their domains.

The monarch said Ademiluyi had been in police custody for over a month.

He said, “Ife obas, numbering 40, have written a protest letter to President Muhammadu Buhari and the same letter was sent to the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris; and the Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, on the continued detention of the arrested monarch.”

The monarchs said they were surprised that the police declared Ademiluyi wanted on March 9 in connection with the clash even when available evidence showed that he (Ademiluyi) was in Lagos when the fight broke out.

Ojutalayo said, “Our investigation revealed that while in the custody of the Nigeria Police, Oba Ademola Adedewe Ademiluyi was stripped of his royal paraphernalia, including the removal of his cap, thereby exposing his bare head which is contrary to the Yoruba custom.

“As if that was not enough, he was paraded at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, like a common criminal alongside other innocent Ile-Ife indigenes that were arrested.

“Your Excellency will agree with us that no emir or any other traditional chief in the northern part of Nigeria would ever have been degraded and ridiculed in the manner Oba Ademola Adedewe Ademiluyi was treated by the Nigeria Police.”

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has released 15 out of the 21 persons arrested for their alleged role in the clash between Hausa and Yoruba youths in Ile-Ife, Osun State, which left at least 46 persons dead.

The Publicity Secretary of the pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, told Punch Newspaper correspondent on the telephone on Thursday that the 15 suspects were released unconditionally.

He, however, noted that the Alapoje of Alapoje community in Ile-Ife, Oba Ademola Ademiluyi, and five others were still in police custody.

Odumakin stated, “The police have released 15 of the Ife 21 (detainees) unconditionally.

They were released to Ropo Oyewole, a member of the legal defence team but the kabiyesi (monarch) and five others are still in custody.”

Odumakin, however, said he did not know why the remaining persons were still in custody.

He identified the released persons as Ayoola Abimbola, Bello Wahab, Peter Omisore, Adefisan Isaac, Adelekan Kehinde, Elufisan Akintoye, Omisanmi Isaac, Adejobe Monday, Olanrewaju Adebayo, Akanbi Adeyinka, Obimakin Samuel, Alhaji Zakariyu Abdulyakeen, Bamidele Elufisan, Clement Kehinde and Akinyombo Seye.

It was learnt that the monarch and five others might soon be arraigned in court by the police.

Curiously, all the suspects paraded by the police on March 20 in Abuja were Yoruba.

No Hausa was arrested by the police.

When contacted, the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, said he was not aware of the release of the suspects.

Ooni Charges Yoruba Groups To Be United
The need for peace and unity among every associations and groups in Yoruba land, formed the fulcrum of the speech delivered by the Ooni of Ile-Ife, His Royal Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ojaja 1, at the 2017 edition of Oodua Festival which held at the Palace Square of the ancient town, Thursday.

The foremost Yoruba traditional leader offered the advice as he received the National Coordinator of the Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, and National Promoter, Olokun Festival Foundation, OFF, Otunba Gani Adams, into his palace for the grand finale of the Oodua Festival.

The Oodua Festival which kicked off in Ile-Ife, Wednesday, climaxed with the grand finale at the Ife Palace Squard, featuring dignitaries from every segments of life as well as executive members of the OPC and Oodua Progressive Movement, OPU.

The OPU is the group formed to promote the Yoruba culture, traditions and value system among Yoruba indigenes in diaspora with Otunba Adams as the World wide Convener.

The Yoruba monarch, while addressing members of the pro-Yoruba socio-cultural organisations, berated some elements among the Yoruba groups who would not follow rules but rather jump guns and break protocols..

Apparently impressed by the orderliness of members of the two groups, Ooni Ogunwusi, admonished that all Yoruba associations should make peace with themselves by forging truce that would foster development and peace in the nation.

According to him, members should swallow their pride and submit to constituted authorities to allow peace reign in the land.

His Majesty also used the occasion to correct a statement credited to him by an OPC renegade group that he said Otunba Adams should resign, said he was shocked that he could be so callously misquoted.

“A group came here and later went back to say I told them that Otunba Gani Adams should resign. There was nothing like that from this palace. I see no need why we should be jealous. The word of God is clear. He said He would bless whom he would bless. As you can all see, these fingers are not equal. One is longer than the rest. That is the order of life.

“I am not pleased with internal wrangling among the various associations in Yorubaland. All these are happening because we don’t really appreciate our potentials. We are richly blessed with good weather, better climate than the rest of the world. All we need to actually enjoy all God has endowed us with, is unity.

“On several occasions I have discussed the issue of unity among the Yoruba groups with Gani Adams and he has always convinced me that he is also on the path of peace. So, in as much as it is natural that one person must lead in an association; I will employ all factional groups to retrace their steps and make peace with their original bodies.

All I want from you is unity, not just in the group but entire Yoruba nation and I won’t keep relent until peace and unity is achieved,” he said.

Ohaneze, Afinifere Attack Buhari, Say Nigeria's Unity Not By Force

Ohaneze, Afinifere Attack Buhari, Say Nigeria's Unity Not By Force

Following President Muhammadu Buhari reaffirmation on Sallah that the unity of Nigeria in not negotiable, the Igbo socio-cultural organisation, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and the pan-Yoruba socio-political body, Afenifere, have faulted the position of the President on his position, stating Nigeria's oneness is not by force.

Buhari had said these when Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Muhammed Bello, led residents of the FCT to pay the President Sallah homage at the Presidential Villa, Abuja

The organisations, on Wednesday, told Buhari that the unity of the country was negotiable.

Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka had, on Tuesday last week, described the oneness of Nigeria as “very negotiable”.

The National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, believed Buhari might not be reading the mood of the nation correctly.

Odumakin in an interview according to Punch Newspaper said, “I think the President is a sincere man but he may not be reading the mood correctly. The country is divided under him than before. Amalgamation and armed dialogue are going on all around us over the unity of Nigeria which many sections perceive has treated them unfairly.

“To continue to insist that the unity is not negotiable is aping that bird which buries its head in the sand and believes, because it is seeing nobody, it has become invisible too.”

Similarly, the Ohaneze, the President of the Ohanaeze Youth Council, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, aligned with Afenifere’s position, saying the unity of Nigeria was negotiable, saying the current structure of Nigeria had not favoured all parts of the country, Punch Newspaper says

According to him, Nigeria’s unity should be subjected to periodic review.

The OYC leader noted that the Igbo, as a group, canvassed the restructuring of the country during the last constitutional conference.

Isiguzoro said, “We (Ohanaeze Ndigbo) believe that Nigeria’s unity is negotiable. The principles and structures on the co-existence of the various nationalities that make up the country should be reviewed periodically.

“At the moment, the structure that is in place is not in favour of everybody.

“Those that it is favouring are the ones who want the status quo to be maintained, but those it has not favoured, like the Igbo, are open to a negotiation of the country’s unity.”

He added, “The Igbo demanded restructuring at the last constitutional conference and we are still holding on to that demand. We believe Nigeria’s unity should be subject to periodic review.

“We are not calling for secession, but a periodic review of the terms of the country’s unity is necessary for peaceful coexistence, otherwise agitations for separation would continue to grow.”
