Contrary to anticipated tension reported over the much talked about the election of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Dr. Supo Ayokunle has emerged the new President of the association following the peaceful conduct of the election yesterday.

The new CAND President-elect is the President, Nigerian Baptist Convention.

Dr. Supo polled 54 votes against 28 polled by Prof. Joseph Otubu of the Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Movement

While Ayokunle contested under the platform of the Christian Council of Nigeria, Otubu contested under the umbrella of the Organisation of African Instituted Churches.

The declaration of Ayokunle as winner of the election was announced by the outgoing President of CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, to a rousing applause at the Ecumenical Centre, Abuja.

Oritsejafor will  hand over to Ayokunle in July.

Out of the 5 blocs in CAN, only the two were able to nominate representatives for the primaries conducted by the Electoral College of CAN.
