EDO 2016: Obaseki Withdraws, Joins Force With PDP's Ize-Iyamu

EDO 2016: Obaseki Steps Down For PDP's Ize-Iyamu
There was excitement in Benin, the Edo State capital, on Sunday as the governorship campaign took on a dramatic twist, and boost for the PDP candidate in the forthcoming election in that state.

The governorship candidate of the Accord Party, Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki announced that he is stepping down for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the September 10, 2016 election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Obaseki who is a younger brother to Godwin Obaseki, candidate of the All Progressives Party, said he is collapsing his entire political structure into the PDP, in support of Ize-Iyamu.

Dr. Obaseki, a veteran writer and university lecturer, said he decided to endorse Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu because he realised that he is the best candidate for the election.

He described Adams Oshiomhole and his brother, Godwin Obaseki as ‘betrayers and unworthy of trust’.

Ize-Iyamu and Governor Oshiomhole had earlier had a war of words when the PDP candidate during his campaign in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of the state on Friday, vowed to probe the administration of the incumbent if elected.

Ize-Iyamu also challenged Oshiomhole to investigate the eight years he (Ize-Iyamu) spent in office as Chief of Staff and Secretary to the State Government.

According to him, “every kobo that has come to Edo State must be accounted for. That is his fear; that is why he can no longer sleep.”
Oshiomhole soon after, fired back, that the threat was laughable.

According to the governor, Ize-Iyamu and other PDP chieftains have to account for funds collected during the 2015 general elections.

More trouble For Fayose As FG Pounces On 9 Ekiti Lawmakers Over Cert. Forgery, Reopens 3 Murder Cases
Fresh trouble might be looming for the embattled Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose as the Federal Government is planning to prosecute nine out of 26 members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly for alleged forgery of their academic results, News Punch has reliably learnt

The government' decision to prosecute them was based on the outcome of “an intensive investigation carried out by the Department of State Services into the state lawmakers’ certificates", Punch Newspaper reports this morning

The Secret Police, it was gathered, carried out the investigation into the credentials submitted by the politicians to the Independent National Electoral Commission during the last general elections.

The probe was sequel to a series of petitions sent to the agency and the Police by aggrieved members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and the opposition party in the state, the All Progressives Congress.

Investigation was said to have been carried out in schools allegedly claimed to have been attended by the lawmakers and their former places of work.

The source explained that the files of the affected lawmakers had been sent to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation for prosecution.

The source added, “We have investigated the academic credentials of the lawmakers based on petitions sent to us by the politicians in the state.

“The petitions were based on alleged false declaration of academic qualifications and alleged age falsification in the papers presented to the INEC.

“We have been able to know that petitions against nine members of the State House of Assembly are genuine.

“We have already presented our report and we are expecting the office of the AGF to study it and prepare the charges against the suspects.”

Meanwhile, it was also gathered that the security agencies were planning to reopen the murder cases of three prominent sons of the state.

They are Mr. Tunde Omojola, Kehinde Fasuba and Dr. Ayo Daramola.

Daramola was murdered on August 14, 2004; Omojola on May 28, 2005; while Fasuba was murdered on January 3, 2009.

There were allegations in the state that their killings were politically-motivated and carried out in mysterious circumstances.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Femi Falana, once wrote a petition to the Police, demanding the prosecution of those behind their killings.

When contacted on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the AGF on Media and Publicity, Mr. Salihu Isah, said he was not aware of the planned prosecution, but promised to find out.

“I am not aware of whether there is anything like that. I promise to find out during the week,” he said.

Jimi Agbaje Battles Godfather, Bode George Over PDP National Chairmanship

Jimi Agbaje Battles Godfather Bode George, Others For PDP Chairmanship.
The rescheduled national convention of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP may have pitched former Lagos State PDP governorship Candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje and his godfather, Chief Olabode George as both have emerged as the contenders for the coveted national chairmanship of the party, News Punch has authoritatively learnt.

Chief Olabode George was a staunch supporter of Jimi Agbaje during the build up to 2015 Lagos PDP gubernatorial primary election at the detriment of the former minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro

A competent party source confided yesterday that the choice of Agbaje as chairman has received the approval of key party organs and stakeholders in virtually all the six geo-political zones, The Nation Newspaper reports this morning

The source, who craved anonymity because he is not mandated to divulge the information, said the South-East zone is the most favourably disposed to having the former governorship candidate lead the party.

The decision to settle for Agbaje was said to have emerged from well thought out permutations on various elective positions ahead of the 2019 general elections.

For instance, the party has zoned its 2019 presidential ticket to the North, which automatically disqualifies any chairmanship candidate from the region.

Similarly, the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, is being primed for the vice president ticket.

The party’s immediate past Deputy National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, is also said to be in reckoning to retain the position, with the backing of the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike.

Power brokers in the PDP were said to have picked Agbaje after extensive deliberations in the past weeks.

He was said to have received more vocal approval than several others considered for the job.

The party leaders were said to have mapped out a strategy to ensure that they are not openly seen to be working for Agbaje’s emergence.

Our source said the former governorship candidate will be made to seek the party’s nomination alongside others with all aspirants treated equally.

“But plans are afoot for massive mobilisation of delegates in the six geo-political zones for Agbaje’s candidature at the upcoming convention to ensure his emergence.

“His backers have decided not to persuade other aspirants to step down, in order to avoid recriminations that could ignite fresh crisis in the party,” the source added.

In the South-West, it was gathered according to Punch Newspaper that both Chief Bode George and Prof. Tunde Adeniran have shown interest in the race.

George, a former military administrator of Ondo State, was also a former deputy national chairman of the party.

He is from Lagos State.

Adeniran, who once attempted to become the national secretary of the party, was a former minister of education.

He hails from Ekiti State.

Both men were said to have divided the party from the zone.

While some believed that Adeniran does not have a faction in the party from the zone, others say he has no experience in party management.

George who has experience in management of political party, is also being accused of belonging to a faction of the party in his home state.

A former Minister of Transportation, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, however told our correspondent that members of the party in the zone would be working for George.

He said that a delegation from the South-West would be meeting with the national caretaker committee in Abuja soon to inform them about their support for George’s ambition.

Babatope also said that it would be wrong for the South-South to want to field a candidate for the position of the national chairman when it just produced the president.

He said, “We are fielding George for the race and we are visiting members of the national caretaker committee on Friday to openly say this.

“It will not be good for the South-South to still show interest in the race when the zone has just produced the president of the country from our party.”

It was however gathered that Adeniran has started sending text messages to his supporters to express his interest in the race.

George, in an interview with our correspondent, confirmed his interest in the race.

He said having served the party at various levels since 1998, he was prepared to lead it out of its present crisis.

He said, “In terms of experience and political exposure, I’m capable of leading the party and I’m ready to submit myself for election. The party is in an interim stormy water and it needs an experienced captain to take it to the harbour. Don’t forget that I’m also a permanent member of the Board of Trustees of the party.

“But we are waiting for the zoning committee to finish its job before I fully commence my campaign. Already, we are reaching out to all zones on the need to support the South-West to lead the party.

“This is because, we have never be given the opportunity of leading the party for the last 17 years.”

It is however not clear who among the candidates from the South-West will have the support of the two governors.

During the last botched convention, Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State rooted for Sheriff before the two of them fell apart due to politics.

The party yesterday inaugurated an 83-member zoning committee charged with the responsibility of deciding the zones that will take the available positions at the national level.

The committee is chaired by the Ebonyi State Governor, Mr. Dave Umahi, with his Gombe State counterpart, Ibrahim Dankwabo, as deputy and former Benue  State Governor, Mr. Gabriel Suswam, as secretary.

The committee also has notable party chieftains across the six geo-political zones as members.

It is expected to submit its report within seven days, after which the sale of nomination forms will commence for the convention billed to hold in Port Harcourt on August 17.

Caretaker committee chairman of the PDP, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, charged the zoning committee to be fair and just in its assignment.

He advised that positions should not be restricted to only one state in a zone but thrown open to aspirants in all the states in the various zones.

Makarfi decried the previous arrangement under the leadership of Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, which led to the May 21 botched convention.

According to him, only one nomination form was made available for each position, including the chairmanship.

Also addressing newsmen shortly after the inauguration ceremony, the spokesman for the caretaker committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said no member of the committee will be contesting any of the available positions.

Adeyeye said the window of reconciliation with the Sheriff group remained open, but added that the condition given by the group that the caretaker committee be dissolved is untenable.

Why I Actually Dumped The PDP For APC - Ribadu

Why I Actually Dumped The PDP For APC - Ribadu
Following Malam Nuhu Ribadu's official return to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC today, the former anticorruption czar has said he returned to his former party for the love of his friends who had all gone back to the party.

The former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Friday returned to the All Progressives Congress.

Mr. Ribadu said in a statement he posted on his Facebook page that he rejoined the party online on Friday, and then hosted officials of the party from his Bako Ward in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Then on Friday, he visited the Yola South secretariat of the APC to present himself to the party.

He had left the party for the Peoples Democratic Party in 2014.

Mr. Ribadu, a former presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, explained that his return to the APC was triggered by his belief that all politics were local and that almost everyone around him who started politics with him believed the time had come for them to make sacrifices and concession.

He said, “My decision to return to the APC was triggered by my belief that all politics are local. Almost everyone around me, and with whom we started my political journey believed the time had come for us to make sacrifices and make concessions. That is in addition to the unbelievable love that my friends in the APC have showered on me in the past months.

“They demonstrated in words and action that they wanted me back home. The intractable crises in the PDP also made it impossible for one to contribute to the necessary task of building a viable opposition platform for our country.

“I also did a deep and long reassessment of the circumstances that warranted my exit from the APC in the first place. I left the APC in 2014 owing to fundamental disagreements with the ways the chapter of the party in my state was run after it fell into some hands.”

Below is Mr. Ribadu’s statement announcing his return to the APC

Today I heeded the calls on me to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a party of which I was a founding member.

I re-registered as a member of the APC last night through the party’s online portal. After that, the leadership of the party in my Bako ward of Yola South Local Government Area visited me in my Yola residence to welcome me back to their fold.

This afternoon, I visited the Yola South secretariat of the party to present myself and submit to the leadership as a loyal party man.

My decision to return to the APC was triggered by my belief that all politics are local. Almost everyone around me, and with whom we started my political journey believed the time had come for us to make sacrifices and make concessions. That is in addition to the unbelievable love that my friends in the APC have showered on me in the past months.

They demonstrated in words and action that they wanted me back home. The intractable crises in the PDP also made it impossible for one to contribute to the necessary task of building a viable opposition platform for our country.

I also did a deep and long reassessment of the circumstances that warranted my exit from the APC in the first place. I left the APC in 2014 owing to fundamental disagreements with the ways the chapter of the party in my state was run after it fell into some hands.

Some colleagues and I tried hard to reposition the fold and save the then APC administration from an orchestrated impeachment plot. We didn’t succeed.

Events in the last 15 months have addressed many of the issues and healed some of the wounds. More so, with the genuine and sincere invitations I received since last year to retrace my steps into the party, I decided to return after consulting family and political associates at all levels.

I would like to appreciate all those members of the party who privately and publicly prodded me to return to the party. My appreciation also goes to the leadership of our party, from my ward in Bako to the national leadership, for the enthusiasm they showed in having me back.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) of Adamawa State has joined the race of groups and individuals calling on a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, to return to the party. This is even as  the former presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria is under pressure from his present party, the PDP, to serve as national chairman to ” reorganise the PDP as it readies itself to reclaim power in 2019, Premium Times revealed

Mr. Ribadu is one of the founding leaders of the party, but left for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, shortly before the 2015 general elections.

In a letter to Mr. Ribadu, signed by the acting secretary of the APC in Adamawa State, Saidu Naira, the ruling party said it was time for Mr. Ribadu to return to his “home party”.

The letter, dated, June, 22, 2016, reads in part:

“Given your track records and progressives nature, we strongly belief APC is where you belong to.

“We are also mindful of the efforts and contributions you made during the merger without which the merger would have been difficult.

“To this end we reaffirm our request for you to come home to APC and assist and contribute to the success of the APC government both at state and national level”.

Efforts to reach Mr. Ribadu or his spokesperson, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, were unsuccessful.
