Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, the factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), seeking to stop the party’s national convention, slated for August 17 in Port Harcourt.
Sheriff has asked the commission to completely ignore a letter sent to it by the chairman of the PDP caretaker committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, notifying the INEC of the proposed convention.
Sheriff, in the letter dated August 2, 2016, said the caretaker committee was illegal and has no powers under the PDP constitution to convene the convention.
Citing Article 31(2) (a) of the PDP Constitution, the former Borno State Governor told the INEC that only the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party could call for and ratify activities culminating in a convention.
The letter further stated that the NEC is headed by Sheriff.
He said INEC and the general public should note that the PDP is not planning to hold any convention, stressing that he had not been authorised by the NEC to do so.
He warned that any person or group of persons planning for the said convention is doing so as an illegal body and in direct contempt of valid court orders.

Makarfi Defies Court Order, Names Gov. Wike To Lead 242 PDP National Convention committee members [FULL LIST]
News Proof 3.8.16 No comments Edit Post
Apparently, in defiant to the court ruling, the Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led by Ahmed Makarfi, on Tuesday announced members that constitute the party’s National Convention Committee.
Federal High Court in Abuja, had last week sacked the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the party.
The court, in a ruling by Justice Okon Abang, held that every action the Committee had taken since it emerged through a convention the party purportedly held in Port Harcourt on May 21, amounted to a nullity.
The Makarfi- led faction of the party also insisted that it will go ahead with its national convention slated for August 17 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State despite a court ruling which declared the Caretaker Committe illegal.
Justice Okon Abang had also declared the Caretaker Committee under Makarfi was ilegal, saying it has no powers to conduct any activity on behalf of the party.
But the Makarfi – led faction in a statement by its secretary, Sen Ben Obi, said the August 17 national convention of the party will hold as slated.
The statement also announced approval of the nomination of the following members to serve on the National Convention Planning Committee.
According to the Makarfi-led faction, the Committees will be inaugurated on Friday in Abuja.

How I Increase My Blokos Size & Stopped Premature Ejaculation Issues That Scattered My Relationship For 2years.. Click HERE for Details
Fresh indication suggests that former President Goodluck Jonathan may have quit active politic temporarily over the ongoing probes into some financial recklessness during his administration.
According to a former member of his campaign team, Jonathan's body language when some leaders of the Peoples democratic Party, PDP went to sort for his intervention on the lingering leadership tussle between, Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Makarfi, what they got from Jonathan was not encouraging.
He said: “His body language was that he did not want to meddle into politics now. He was like, his entry back to politics now would jeopardise the ongoing probes and investigations by the Federal Government on different activities of his administration.
Acccording to New Telegraph, some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are angry over the continued silence of former President Goodluck Jonathan on the crisis rocking the party since after the 2015 general elections. They have been expecting the former president to intervene to resolve the crisis which currently has placed the party into three factions – the Ahmed Makarfi- led committee backed by governors of the party; the Senator Ali Modu Sheriff faction, which was displaced at the last national convention in Port Harcourt and the Jerry Gana faction, which currently has its members scattered in different camps.
Penultimate week in Abuja, some PDP senators had gone to seek an audience with Jonathan. Sources that were privy to the meeting said they got no commitment from the former president on his intervention.
A former member of Jonathan’s campaign told New Telegraph yesterday that what they got from Jonathan was not encouraging. He said: “His body language was that he did not want to meddle into politics now. He was like, his entry back to politics now would jeopardise the ongoing probes and investigations by the Federal Government on different activities of his administration.
They left without a firm promise from him of his intervention.” Some of the leaders, who spoke with New Telegraph, expressed worries that Jonathan, who benefitted from the party from 1999 until 2015 on different levels, could not just fold his hands and watch the party in ruins on the pretence that he was on a sabbatical from politics. Between 1999 and 2015, Jonathan was a Deputy Governor and Governor of Bayelsa State; Vice President, Acting President and President of Nigeria.
But soon after his defeat by the Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC), just few days before the handover ceremonies, Jonathan had stunned select party leaders in Aso Rock, when he told them that he was taking a sabbatical from politics. He had thanked them for their efforts and the height the PDP had taken him. Efforts by leaders of the party to persuade the former president from ‘retiring’ in form of sabbatical hit the brick walls. He did not shake.
“I was there the night, few days before handover when he called us and told us that he wanted to thank all the leaders and wanted to go on sabbatical. A lot of people said, ‘Sir, Mr. President, you cannot go on sabbatical. This is not a university.
You should continue to manage the party until another presidential candidate emerges.’ That is because in our party, the president is the leader of the party,” said Chief Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the party. Reminded that both Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, two former presidents of the party were no longer playing active roles in the party, George said that has affected the party badly.
He said: “I remember that night. It was a night I would not forget because a lot of appeal went to him that he has to stay because that’s what happens in America. He must manage the party until a Goodluck Jonathannew candidate emerges.”
Many within the party believe that the failure of Jonathan to intervene in the crisis was responsible for the lingering feud, especially between Sheriff and Markarfi. A party leader from the North told New Telegraph last night that if Jonathan or Obasanjo were in the party, the situation would have been different. “All these rubbish would have stopped if we had any of the former presidents as leaders of the party now.
All they needed to do was to summon a meeting of the parties. Overnight, the problem would be over. But now, we are in the hands of the governors, who are toying with the future of the party.”
He said that what was shocking was the fact that Jonathan knew that the party was rudderless and has not made efforts to settle the intra-party strife. Another source, who was a member of the Jonathan’s Presidential Campaign team, blamed the former president for the crisis in the party today. He asserted that but for Jonathan’s insistence to run in 2015, against advice from party leaders and the then PDP governors, led by now Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, the party would not have lost the election and arrived on a path to perdition so soon.
He said that the interest of the former president to vie for another term pitched him against the then Amaechi-led Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF). According to a source who was privy to what transpired at the time, the governors were initially against the 2011 candidature of Jonathan, but he threatened them and they caved in because their political interests were also at stake. He said: “After Jonathan finished Yar’Adua’s term, stakeholders within the PDP, especially the governors, felt he had benefitted enough after one year and six months in office as president. They actually wanted a Northerner to take over from him by barring his candidature in 2011.
“But the ex-president threatened them and said he was going to sink the ship if they didn’t allow him run, which means some of the governors who wanted a second term may not get it and those who wanted to install their successors may be frustrated.
“After different parleys, the governors gave him the passage to run, but an agreement was reached that he would only run for a term and the ex-president agreed to that term.” While noting that the North deliberately worked against the party and its candidate in the presidential election, he noted that if the party had fielded a Northerner as its presidential candidate in the 2015 election, PDP would not have been in its present crisis.
“There is no way one can divorce the unbridled ambition of Jonathan which was fuelled by sycophants and those making fortunes from the administration, from the present crisis within the party. A Northern candidate in 2015 instead of Jonathan would have put the party in a pole position to maintain its winning streaks since 1999 and those governors won’t have left the party and our structure would have been intact,” he said.
PDP Crisis: Governors DIVIDED; Mimiko & Co Dump Makarfi, Hold All Night Meeting With Sheriff
News Proof 31.7.16 No comments Edit Post
RipplesNigeria - The leadership crisis rocking the PDP, is far from over and may even polarise the party further, as the latest ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja has split the rank of governors elected on the party’s platform along pro and anti-Sheriff lines.
Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja, had last Thursday, declared Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the authentic chairman of the party, declaring the Ahmed Makarfi led caretaker committee as illegal and the Port Harcourt Federal High Court judgment recognising Makarfi’s committee as unknown in law.
According to reports, jolted by the judgment, Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State was said to have held a secret meeting with Sheriff on Thursday night.
Similarly, some members of the Board of Trustees BoT of the PDP are believed to have changed their stands by wooing Sheriff, who may convene a stakeholders meeting later this week.
According to sources, Mimiko’s secret meeting was because of the need to have Sheriff push the candidature of his anointed candidate, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, for the state governorship election later in the year.
The sources also claimed that Mimiko pledged loyalty to Sheriff while also canvassing for the reconciliation of all camps in the party.
A source close to the meeting said: “The meeting was a follow up to the decision of the court that Sheriff is the authentic chairman of the party.
“It was secret but fruitful. Don’t forget that Mimiko is also the outgoing chairman of the PDP Governors Forum.

“In all honesty, the governor also spoke on how to keep the party united.
“Mimiko actually said he will abide by the Rule of Law on the crisis in the party.
“You know Ondo chapter of the PDP will soon hold its governorship primaries. He does not want the crisis in the party to have spiral effect on the choice of candidate in Ondo as the case with Edo State.”
Another PDP source however disclosed that the PDP governors have broken into two camps on account of the court ruling.
According to the source, the governors of Taraba, Gombe, Enugu, Cross River, and Ondo are backing Sheriff while those of Rivers, Ekiti, Ebonyi, Delta, Abia, Akwa Ibom are against him.
The source however said the Bayelsa Governor, Seriake Dickson, is playing the role of peace maker, working hard at reconciling the factions.
The source said: “We are experiencing a division among our governors because of the ruling of the court. Some are insisting that the party should abide by the rule of law and engage Sheriff.
“Some of the governors said the party should save itself from Sheriff by going through the legal battle from the lower court to the Supreme Court.
“But Governor Dickson is preaching dialogue and reconciliation to both sides because the time element is important for PDP. We need to put our house in order before the 2019 poll.
The source insisted that If Sheriff sticks to his mandate till 2018, the party will remain divided and unprepared for the next election. Alternatively, he said most of the leaders will leave the party.
Meanwhile, News Punch had earlier reported that the Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko is also in secret deal with the former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2019 Presidency. The deal is expected to form a new party which both will emerge as President and Vice respectively

Apparently dissatisfied with the suppressed musings in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the perennial crisis in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), key figures in both parties are mulling what a source called ‘a strong third force’.
If ongoing secret consultations are fruitful, the third force is a new political party ahead of the 2019 presidential election that would witness the pairing of former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and the incumbent governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, as presidential candidate and running mate respectively, Sunday Telegraph gathered. Curiously, while Atiku, with eyes glued to the presidency, belongs to the APC, the Ondo State governor is of the PDP and indeed, a key figure in the resolution of the crisis in the opposition party.
Mimiko’s tenure will lapse in February 2017. According to a highly placed source, the new party will emerge in the last quarter of 2017, even as a positive outcome (for the PDP) of the November 2016 governorship election in Ondo State is the likely template for the permutation.
The SDP, Falae/Afenifere link
As part of the plan, a meeting between the former vice president and former presidential candidate and national chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Chief Olu Falae, might hold in a couple of weeks, barring the unforeseen.
The source said the SDP is one of the options being stratified by the duo of Atiku and Mimiko, if the idea of a fresh political party appears cumbersome. Falae, an Afenifere chieftain from Ondo State and political benefactor of the governor, is expected to mobilize the pan Yoruba organisation across the South-West as a ‘counter force to the existing power equation in the region’.
The source said, ‘’Like a nation in want of leadership, proper leadership and a new dawn will soon face the country because what Nigerians are getting is not what they bargained for. The change Atiku, Mimiko meetingmantra appears to be fading and some persons are beginning to think otherwise.
‘’As it was in the run up to the last presidential election, whereby hitherto antagonistic persons came together for a common cause and installed the current government, we are looking at the possibility of mobilizing all and sundry to rescue the nation from nepotisim.
‘’From all indications, the current leadership has failed the nation and if you read what a North West leader said in an interview today (yesterday), you need no one to tell you that we require a drastic political direction.
‘’In the process, anything can happen, including the registration of a new political party or reviving an existing one because in all the major parties, that is PDP and APC, there are problems.
‘’So we are going to reach out to our major political bloc, the Afenifere, as well as some of the Third Republic SDP governors who are now sidelined in the two parties.” Asked about the possibility of a new party flourishing in the South West, when the current vice president hails from there, the source said it was immaterial.
‘’That is immaterial. As far as some of us are concerned, whether he is VP or not, Osinbajo does not have the political sagacity of the Ondo State governor. I ask, can a Buhari or whoever and Osinbajo APC ticket beat an Atiku/ Mimiko ticket?
‘’They can longer deceive our people because the truth has come out. They shouted restructuring before election and abandoned it after their victory. Are these people trustworthy? Definitely, a counter force to the existing power equation in the region is about to be reinvigorated’’, the source said.
..Any role for Kuku as Ondo guber race test-runs plot ?
Sunday Telegraph gathered that as a possible inroad and sustenability in the South West, the former vice president was partly instrumental to the choice of the immediate past Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, as Governor Mimiko’s preferred candidate of the PDP for the November governorship election. Atiku and Jegede are friends, the latter having resided in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, for almost two decades and has been a personal friend and counsel to the former vice president.
The opposition from a section of the party’s leadership notwithstanding, Jegede looks good to emerge as the PDP candidate and he’s reportedly groomed to prepare grounds for the new party if he becomes governor.
Mimiko is said to have also successfully planted his loyalist, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, as South West chairman of the PDP even as he has opened discussions with self-exiled former presidential aide, Kingsley Kuku. Governor Mimiko, it was gathered, has sent a delegation of state government officials to Kuku in the United States of America, where he is currently based, to firm up details of the governor’s overtures.
Details ares still sketchy as at the time of this report, but it was gathered that Kuku has reportedly insisted that he should be picked as Jegede’s governorship running mate to have his support.
Sunday Telegraph learnt that in the ensuing permutation, Kuku, of the Ijaw extraction, has promised to leverage on his links with his kinsmen, the largest ethnic group in the South South cutting across Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers and Akwa- Ibom, to mobilize for the envisioned party and make an Inroad into the troubled Niger Delta.
Kuku had declared his intention to be governor before fleeing the country, following manhunt for him my the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged financial Atiku, Mimikoimpropriety as head of the Niger Delta Presidential Amnesty Programme.
Atiku has maintained, on many occasions, that he remains a committed member of the APC, but reports have been rife since the beginning of the year that the former vice president has severally complained of being sidelined in the affairs of the party.
His subtle but controlled criticism of the present government has been noticed in the last few months just as he has secretly embarked on a nationwide consultation with his political associates with a view to redirecting his political future.
It will be recalled that Atiku drew the ire of the Presidency and leadership of APC as, aside decrying lack of focused leadership, he openly canvassed for the restructuring of the country, an idea President Muhammadu Buhari and his vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, have discredited.
Although it could not be independently confirmed, Atiku was reportedly summoned and cautioned by the national leadership of the APC for his various utterances in the media.
He was said to have equally protested against the return of the erstwhile chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to the APC.
Atiku and Ribadu, both from Adamawa State, have had several running battles.
While Ribadu held sway at the EFCC under former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Atiku was dislodged from the then ruling party, the PDP, in the run up to the 2007 presidential election.
Reports have it that the former anti corruption czar, an elder brother of the president’s wife, Aisha Buhari, was encouraged to join the party by the First Lady and former president, Obasanjo, who is yet to mend fences with his estranged former deputy for over 10 years now.
